The Borrowdale Valley is renowned for some of the most dramatic and beautiful scenery in the Lake District, dominated by a handful of England’s tallest mountains. Quaint villages, stately oak forests and the crystal waters of the River Derwent make this a great spot for exploration. Steel yourself to stand under the precariously balanced Bowder Stone, which looks as if it might topple at any moment, or take in peerless views from the rustic stone arch of Ashness Bridge, itself a much-photographed site.
Nearby Buttermere Valley, with a string of gorgeous lakes, is less-trafficked but provides scenery just as spectacular as more popular areas and includes Scale Force, the highest waterfall in the Lake District.

It was spectacular. As some one new to area I would have struggled to choose where to start. This was brilliant.

Keswick is your base for exploring Borrowdale Valley. As an alternative to driving, take one of the busses which leave from the town, taking in highlights of the valley. For Buttermere, head for the namesake village and consider one of the signposted walks, with routes for all abilities ranging from leisurely to challenging.
