While Peru was once a budget traveler’s dream (and parts of it certainly still is), many of the most popular spots will have backpackers going through soles at an alarming rate. Some of this is unavoidable, and pinching centimos in Cusco, for example, would mean missing out on Machu Picchu and other incredible Inca ruins. But, in Lima, at least, there are ways to save and still enjoy the city.

Peru’s sprawling capital, clocking in at 8.5 million people, offers something for everyone. There are certainly things worth shelling out the admission fees to see, including the Larco Archaeologica Museum, National Museum, the huacas (archaeological sites) and the San Francisco Cathedral catacombs. You certainly shouldn’t skimp on eating out, either, not here in the gastronomical capital of South America.
