There are few places more quintessentially and unashamedly English than Oxford, a city so picturesque that even its nickname, ‘The City of Dreaming Spires’, sounds lifted from a classic romance novel. With its medieval skyline of church spires, cobbled streets snaking through the town center and stately gardens adding a touch of greenery, this is a city that perfectly blends old English charm with modern shopping streets, a cutting-edge arts scene and a buzzing nightlife.

A mere 55 miles from London and just an hour train ride, Oxford makes a popular day trip for those looking to escape the hectic pace of the capital. The city lends itself to walking tours, with many of the key sights within easy walking distance.

Perhaps the most famous landmark of Oxford is its world-renowned University, the oldest in the English speaking world dating back to 1096, with an alumni that reads like a roll-call of history’s most notable literary, science and political figures – Lewis Carroll, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher and even Albert Einstein, have all walked the halls at some point. The 38 colleges and numerous museums, libraries and parks that make up the University are some of the city’s great delights. Highlights include the Gothic Bodleian Library, the Ashmolean Museum (founded in 1683, making it the oldest in the UK), the Sheldonian Theater (designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1664) and Christ Church College, home to Oxford’s Cathedral (and Harry Potter fans will be keen to note: the film set location for the now-legendary Hogwart’s Hall).

The famous child wizard isn’t the only film character to bring Oxford’s architecture to the big screen; the city has a rich history with the arts and has provided film locations in recent years for James Bond, The Oxford Murders and The Golden Compass. Literary buffs can join one of the city’s many literary tours, taking in the sights and locations that inspired classics like The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe, Alice in Wonderland, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Inspector Morse series.

Once you’re tired of marveling at the architecture and craning your neck to admire the many spires and arches, there’s plenty of entertainment on offer. Stroll around the many shopping streets, take a rest at one of the city’s abundant cafes and restaurants or wander around the exquisite Botanic gardens, the oldest of their kind in Britain dating back to 1621. If you’re there in the summer months, you could even try your hand at punting (small boats propelled along with a pole) along the Cherwell River, or head to the Oxford Castle Quarters to catch one of the many Shakespeare performances.

The area surrounding the city is ripe with opportunities for rural explorations too, with the Oxfordshire area officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Many day or multi-day tours from London include trips to Shakespeare’s birthplace, Stratford Upon Avon. You can also have a scenic jaunt around the Cotswolds, the summer location of choice for affluent Londoners with its thatched roof cottages, pretty rose gardens and vast rolling hills. Another easy detour, just 8 miles from Oxford city center, is the impressive Blenheim Palace, a World Heritage Site featuring over 2,000 acres of park-lands and is the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. Whether you choose to whiz around the sights on a day tour or spend several days exploring, there’s plenty to keep you busy.
