From his razor-sharp eye for forensic details to his enduring friendship with loyal sidekick Dr Watson, few fictional characters are as beloved as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s madcap detective – Sherlock Holmes. Since his first appearance in print in 1887, the inimitable detective has proved so popular that he’s featured in hundreds of stories, comics, video games, TV shows and films - most recently Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law - making him one of the most prolific literary characters in history.

Through all Holmes’ escapades the one constant is the location and there’s no better way to get an insight into the mysterious world of Sherlock Holmes than strolling the streets of London. Deerstalker caps and magnifying glasses at the ready – it’s time to rediscover the British capital through the eyes of the world’s favorite fictional detective.

The Sherlock Holmes House and Museum makes the obvious starting place for tours and it’s testament to the widespread influence of the character that his fictional address has now been turned into a real-life recreation of the detective’s home. Head to 221B Baker Street  and you can sink into Holmes’ favorite armchair in his characteristic Victorian study; check out his wacky disguises and treasured calabash pipe; and ponder the latest mysteries jotted in his detective notebook. Don’t forget to get your picture taken with John Doubleday’s Sherlock Holmes statue, which stands on the street nearby, or head to Madame Tussauds to cozy up with a waxwork replica of Robert Downey Jr in his Sherlock Holmes costume.

There are dozens of other sights to check out and fans can visit the Royal Opera House and the Freemasons Hall – both key sights in Sherlock Holmes films; book dinner reservations at one of Holmes’ favorite haunts – Simpson’s in the Strand; or tuck into the Sherlock Holmes-themed menu at the Sherlock Holmes Pub in Charing Cross.

The best way to get up close and personal with Sherlock Holmes though, is to book on a Sherlock Holmes Film Location Tour of London where you’ll visit the filming locations for Guy Ritchie’s 2009 Sherlock Holmes film and the 1979 thriller ‘Murder by Decree’, as well as many of the key sights from the books. Somerset House (Pentonville Prison), the fictional Diogenes Club and the Royal Academy building are all featured locations, but the best part is getting the inside scoop on the making of the films and the creation of all your favorite characters.
