Luang Prabang is filled with holy temples, golden gongs and beautiful Buddhas. But there’s also plenty of adventure for the outdoor enthusiast, too. Whether it’s voyaging to the Mekong River or hiking rocky cliffs in search of epic views, this city delivers when it comes to adventurous outings.
Kuang Si Falls
This three-tier turquoise waterfall just outside Luang Prabang is a favorite destination among travelers looking to explore the natural beauty of Laos’s countryside. Rushing blue waters cascade more than 60 meters (200 feet) down rocky cliffs into calm pools that are perfect for cooling off on hot days.
Kuang Si Falls Butterfly Park
Run by a Dutch couple, this eco-project is home to hundreds of butterflies who thrive in the immaculate natural environment. The owners offer guided tours, and travelers can learn about a wide variety of species, as well as local conservation efforts, while relaxing in the park’s lush gardens. The park is located at the entrance to the Kuang Si Falls.
Take the many stairs to the top of this hill in the center of the city to see truly spectacular panoramic sunrise and sunset views. Stop to rest at any of the handful of temples along the trail up or choose an open shady spot under a tree to take in your vast surroundings.
Ride atop one of the world’s largest mammals for a bird’s-eye view of the Lao jungle. Travelers can learn about the behaviors of these majestic giants while exploring a forested trail to the Huay Sae Valley before stopping for lunch at a secluded waterfall and taking a ride in a bamboo raft on the Nam Khan River.
Mekong River Cruise
Hop aboard one of Laos’ famous riverboats for an easy float through the lush scenery. Lounge on the sundeck and enjoy some of the country’s flavorful cuisine while taking in the countryside on your way to riverside attractions like the Pak Ou Caves and Whisky Village.
