Luxor Itineraries
Relying on Tourism for 80% of the city's income, Luxor is unashamedly welcoming of the foreign visitor. With so much history in the surrounding mountains as well as in the heart of the city itself, it's no wonder Luxor is an essential stop on most itineraries in Egypt. Prepare for jostling tour buses, pushy market vendors and swarms of people wherever you go, but do not be put off. The majesty of ancient Thebes - City of the Kings - more than makes the effort worthwhile.
Luxor is history, history, history, and its the fun kind you were taught in school. Deception, treachery, jealousy and love in the Pharaonic world built and destroyed the ancient city, but the remnants of these times still stand defiantly against the desert landscape thousands of years later, and they simply need to be seen to be believed.
Day 1 - City of the Living
Today is all about life as the East Bank of Luxor is littered with monuments built as tributes to the lives of some of Egypt's great Pharaohs. Admire the towering columns of Karnak Temple, one of the greatest complexes built in Egypt which features contributions from at least 7 different Pharaohs over time. Learn the fascinating history of Luxor Temple which sits right in the middle of bustling Luxor and is often unwisely overlooked by visitors to the city. At both temples you can see the remains of the Avenue of Sphinx which once stretched the 2 kilometers between the two temples.
In the evening return to Karnak Temple for the famous Sound and Light Show. Walk through the same rooms and passages as you did earlier in the day, but with the added intrigue of the cover of darkness.
Day 2 - Kings, Queens and all things ancient
Set your alarm clock for an early wake up and hit the skies on a Hot Air Balloon Flight over Luxor's West Bank. See famous sights such as Hatchepshut Temple, Rasmuseum and the Colossi of Memnon as the sunrises from the East Bank. Floating through the tranquil morning skies, you will feel a world away from the chaos on the ground below, with the only sounds being the balloon firing up and the wind carrying the occasional bleet from a waking goat below.
With your feet back on the ground, get closer to these great monuments of the West Bank along with a visit to the Valley of the Kings on a Private Tour of the West Bank. See where great Pharaohs including Tutankhamun and Ramses II were entombed with their great treasures amongst the desolate sandstone mountains of the West Bank. Also learn the unusual history of the striking Hatchepshut Temple and its owner.
Day 3 - Delve a little deeper
Head out of town on a tour to Dendara and Abydos, two of the lesser known temples of Upper Egypt, where you will learn more about two of ancient Egypt's most famous figures - goddess Hathor and God Osiris. These two famous names are featured widely in the artwork found in tombs and temples throughout the country, and play an important role in the story of ancient Egypt.
This is just a taste of the history to be found in Luxor; for more ideas check out Viator's complete list of things to do in Luxor and Aswan. If you want to extend your trip to other parts of Egypt, Cairo is a great place to start, jam-packed with Pyramids, Pharaohs and all things ancient you can imagine. Relax by the Red Sea with a visit to Hurghada or Sharm el Sheikh, and see what the diving world is raving about. Make the most of your trip on an Multi-day Nile River Cruise, which will sail along the most picturesque stretch of the famous river.
