Lyon is France's gastronomic capital, with endless piggy-driven dishes and delicacies to savour, and a bounty of eateries in which to do so. Throw two mighty rivers, a couple of Roman amphitheaters and a generous dose of Renaissance architecture into the pot and the city is a sure-fire winner.
Commercial, industrial and banking powerhouse for the past 500 years, Lyon (aka Lyons) is the focal point of an urban area of almost two million people. Outstanding art museums, a dynamic cultural life, a busy clubbing and drinking scene, not to mention a thriving university and fantastic shopping, lend the city a distinctly sophisticated air. It's not surprising that the city of Lyon has been selected by UNESCO as a world heritage site since 1998.
Lyon is also a city of rivers and hills. You can cruise the rivers, or walk the river banks (just renovated). You can plunge into the city's hidden traboules (secret passageways that weave across the old city) or you can hop on one of the oldest funiculars railways in Europe to climb the hill of Fourviére to the Basilica for a spectacular view of the city and distant mountains.
