Wine Tasting Tours from Madrid
By Viator, June 2014
Within the city limits, just about every bar and restaurant has wine-tasting potential. That’s because, costing around usually two to three euros a glass, Spanish wine is almost always insanely delicious and affordable. Additionally, most bartenders and waiters are likely to have a general knowledge of what each type of wine might offer.
If you’re looking for a more in-depth introduction to Spanish wine in Madrid, though, consider heading out on a guided tour, such as a Madrid Tapas and Wine-Tasting Tour. During this three-hour jaunt through the city, you’ll have the opportunity to visit at least four of the city’s best tapas bars, sampling 10 different tapas and washing them down with one taste of wine after the next. Acquaint yourself with grape varietals like Tempranillo, Malvar and Barnacha, all while getting a better understanding of Spanish cuisine.
If you’re eager to immerse yourself still further in wine culture, perhaps take a tour outside of the city, such as the Spanish Wine Tour From Madrid. The eight-hour excursion will take you to three different acclaimed wineries – called bodegas — where you’ll be able to learn about and sample wine from the Madrid region, an official denominación de origen (DO) territory in Spain. And, since groups are relatively small, expect the experience to be an intimate one.
Still not enough? Consider escaping even farther into the Spanish countryside, and beyond just Madrid. Head to the La Rioja wine region, to the areas surrounding Barcelona, or to Andalucia in the south; all places where you can discover even more libations, like sparkling wine, called cava, or the dessert-wine sherry.
