Marrakech’s foremost museum is housed in a 19th century palace which draws on earlier architectural glories for inspiration, all centered on an Andalusian-style courtyard. The current form of the museum is largely due to patron Omar Benjelloun, who did much to reanimate interest in Morocco’s cultural heritage.
Exhibits include ceramics, jewels, arms, costumes, calligraphy and a collection of Judaica, reflecting the diverse cultural history of the city. Also on display is a fascinating selection of etchings which show Morocco as it has been viewed by foreign artists over the centuries.
Works by contemporary Moroccan artists round out the permanent collection, while a program of temporary exhibitions makes use of the old hammam and other spaces of the palace.

Not a bad tour. I was quite annoyed by the tour guide who felt that we should have spoken French. We felt as if we were an inconvenience because we spoke English. Continue Reading »
The main problem with the tour was that the hotel we stayed in has 2 receptions but no one at the tour company told me this when I phoned to confirm as requested. In consequence we waited at the reception where we were dropped off throughout our stay and missed the tour on the allotted date. Fortunately the tour company fitted us in on the next day's trip but this was with the Discovery of Marrakech group and did not give us the full tour on which we were booked. I think you should ensure that the local office advise tourists which reception they will collect from to avoid confusion for future travelers! Continue Reading »
The museum lies to the north-east of Djemaa el Fna; a visit can be combined with a relaxing break in the nearby Majorelle Gardens.
