Doing what: Spectacular Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour
A highlight for the week. Our guide was full of information about this site and other information about Hawaii

Unfortunately the weather did not cooperate with us on our Sunrise Tour. The only thing I can say is that is you talk about a continental breakfast then make it one. Pastries from Costco that sit above the driver is not breakfast. Otherwise the the driver was OK.

Doing what: Haleakala, Iao Valley and Central Maui Day Tour
Slightly stressful start as the initial pickup bus transfers you to a tour bus that can be packed. The views from the top of the Volcano are fantastic and there's also a stop at the national park entrance (where all the American's aboard seemed to be stamping some sort of USA park visits passport). 20 minutes at this entrance was sufficient time, however we only spent 10 minutes at the mountain summit. This was very disappointing as there was plenty to see and there are effectively three sides (three viewing points) to see it from. We then had 45 minutes at the crater viewing station, but again this wasn't enough as it takes 30 minutes just to climb up and down to the main viewing point. This made the restaurant meal in one of the villages at the bottom of the mountain very disappointing as it was very expensive, tips were automatically charged on the bill, and we spent longer eating than we spent at all three viewing stops combined. I paid to see the volcano, not to sit in a pay for yourself restaurant. After lunch we visited the innards of the smaller volcano on the other side of the island. This is interesting but nothing special as you don't visit any high up vantage points. The main volcano is certainly worth visiting, and doing it on this tour is fairly hassle free, but there was nothing like enough time at the volcano's peak and were I to return to the island I may prefer to hire a car and make my own way to the summit so that I can spend several hours there.

Doing what: Turtle Reef Kayak Tour
My family and I really enjoyed this tour. Incredible opportunity to get close to whales and could have spend the entire trip whale watching and done without the snorkeling.

Great view and a once in a lifetime experience but a long trip from Kannapali Beach.

Doing what: Spectacular Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour
Our tour guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, but talked way too much for 3 AM! It was none stop talk all the way up the mountain. Part of the reason we decided to go with this tour over driving ourselves was so we could sleep! Needless to say this was not possible with the guide talking the whole way through.

Doing what: Spectacular Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour
Haleakala was fabulous, as expected! However, the bus and driver presented issues. The bus and/or the driver smelled terribly bad - it was very offensive. Especially at 2:45AM! The driver was an excellent driver and was very knowledgeable about Haleakala and surrounding environs, history, etc. However, he had the most monotone and slow speech pattern that I've ever heard, making almost impossible to pay attention to him. It was sort of like "white noise". Very disappointing because he actually had a wealth of information.

Doing what: Spectacular Haleakala Maui Sunrise Tour
Very early start. Our driver spoke very softly and at times sounded half asleep. Very difficult to stay awake listening to him at 2am in the morning, especially when he was very repetitive. The bus was small and full. There is not much room in the bus. It’s very cold at the volcano – so make sure you bring very warm clothes. A jumper is not enough. Would be good if the tour provided cold weather jackets – saw another tour had provided them which would have really helped when standing outside for over an hour in the cold and dark.
That said the sunrise was worth waiting for and you quickly forget your frozen fingers and toes once the sun rises above the clouds. The continential breakfast was coffee (too bad if you don’t drink coffee) and a pre-packaged pastry. Not my idea of a continental breakfast. Think a more substantial breakfast could be provided as it’s a very very long trip and one pastry doesn’t really cut it. Maybe also provide tea or hot chocolate. Hot water with a few tea bags and chocolate powder wouldn’t be that hard.

Bus was crowded and driver was uninspired, though the information was interesting. Sunrise was, however, beautiful.

Definitely experience this for yourself! It reminded me that God is in control!
It is cold up there so make sure to be properly dressed so that you do not feel uncomfortable.
I wasexperiencing a variety of emotions waiting for the sun to rise and watching the sun rise: anxiety, happiness, thankfulness, awe--everything positive. Man could not duplicate this if he tried.
I would love to go on this tour again.
