Hiking El Penol from Medellin

One of the most relaxing day trips from Medellin is an excursion to El Penol. This popular outdoor destination is located about 86km (53mi) northeast of Medellin proper, close to the adorable little town of Guatape.

On the shores of a manmade lake created in the 1960s by a hydroelectric dam, the pretty little city has been a popular destination for Medellin families for decades. With its cheerfully painted streets, pleasant climate, and access to ferries, islands, and all sorts of watersports, Guatape would be a fine destination even without the star attraction.
