Day Trips to Phillip Island

Less than two hours outside Melbourne, Phillip Island is an incredibly popular day trip destination for visitors to Victoria's capital city.

Phillip Island has one of the world's most accessible penguin colonies. Every evening hundreds of visitors line up along specially constructed boardwalks to watch the Little Penguins waddle up the beach after a long day fishing at sea.

It’s truly a sight you can’t miss.

Though the penguins are only ‘on display’ at dusk, there are still plenty of things to fill your day trip to Phillip Island with.

Start with a visit to Maru Koala and Animal Park. It’s not actually on Phillip Island itself, but its close proximity and abundance of native wildlife make it an essential stop on your Phillip Island trip. Kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, koalas, Tasmanian devils, dingoes and more are on display for you to see, and there’s a mini golf course to play on after you’ve seen all the animals.

For those travelling without children, structuring your day trip around gourmet food and wine will ensure you have a more elegant experience. The Phillip Island Winery offers wine tastings and guided tours, as well as offering samples of local cheeses, honey and chutney. On Phillip Island itself, the Phillip Island Chocolate Factory is a must-do destination – the Panny’s Amazing World of Chocolate exhibit has lifesize statues and murals made entirely out of chocolate!

The Koala Conservation Centre is also on the island, and a great location to learn more about the animals and the efforts of conservationists to preserve the species. If you fancy seeing some amazing views and natural formations, head to the southwest tip of the island the see the Nobbies, and Seal Rocks’ resident fur seal population.

The penguins, of course, are the main event. The Penguin Parade is made up of boardwalks from which you can watch the penguins waddle right past, and often under, your feet. The Private Experience however might be just what you need to finish off your day. With priority seating with your own expert, plus an exclusive viewing platform, the private experience is a truly special way to see the best of Phillip Island’s Little Penguins.
