New Year's Eve in Melbourne
By Viator, September 2015
An Australian New Year's Eve is unlike any New Year's Eve you might experience in the northern hemisphere. You can party all night without catching hyperthermia for a start and there are no queues for the cloakroom! Melbourne's balmy summer temperatures are ideal for relaxing outdoors, showing off your favorite party dress or new shirt, and enjoying a cold glass of your favorite beverage.
A great way to enjoy the weather and be a part of the festivities is to book a cruise down the Yarra River where you will cruise into prime position for the midnight firework display!
Or you can join many Melbournians who gather at one of several parks and gardens throughout the city to watch the free firework displays and live entertainment in an alcohol-free atmosphere. While most people spread out a picnic blanket and base themselves in one spot to enjoy the evening’s entertainment, it is also possible to visit several venues throughout the night.
The evening usually begins at 6pm with family entertainment in Alexandra Gardens, Birrarung Mar and Docklands (Waterfront City) where you can enjoy carnival rides, children's activities and live stage performances. The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and fun as everyone eagerly awaits the 9.15pm firework displays.
At midnight, the city's most spectacular fireworks display weaves a path of color and light from the top of CBD all the way to Docklands and locals get ready to party well into the following day.
The free entertainment continues until 1am at Federation Square with a program of music and performers designed to get you dancing. If that isn't enough for one night, you can continue to celebrate in one of Melbourne's many excellent bars, pubs or nightclubs or you can book a Melbourne New Year's Eve Party Cruise (drinks, music and spectacular fireworks viewing included!).
