Australia's Yarra Valley, located about 25 miles (40 km) northwest of Melbourne, produces some of the country's finest wines. The region's specialty is pinot noir and chardonnay, though the cool climate also yields some fine cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc, among other varietals. Being so close to the city it's an excellent place for a day trip, though you can easily spend more time here, tasting, snacking, bushwalking (hiking), or just lazing away. Some of the more interesting ways of getting around include hot air balloon, vintage steam train, and horseback. In addition to wine tasting, there's a world-class wildlife sanctuary, lush ferntree gullies, and many outstanding restaurants, cafes, cheese shops and other foodie destinations. Keep your eyes peeled and you might see a koala sleeping in a gum (eucalyptus) tree.
