Take a ride on the Bernina Express, Switzerland's newest Alpine delight. This magnificent 3-hour train journey takes you along one of the most beautiful railway routes in the world over the Bernina Pass to the exclusive resort of St. Moritz, the 'Top of the World'.
This north-south Alpine crossing offers breathtaking views as you travel over boldly curved viaducts and through winding tunnels. Traveling along these ingeniously designed train lines, discover why the Rhaetian Railway is one of the most unique historic tracks in the world. Rather than using cog wheel tracks to climb the steep alpine slopes, the track circles back on itself, climbing the mountains with circular viaducts and tunnels to provide exhilarating panoramic views.
The route travels amid the palms and oleanders of northern Italy in Tirano, taking you over the spiralling viaduct at Brusio and through the Bernina Pass into Engadine. Along the way you'll pass wild gorges and icy glaciers, cross soaring bridges and pass through looping tunnels and picturesque meadows. The train stops in the midst of ski runs and the original stone built Ospizio Bernina rail station, transporting you to the past with its hand signal desk and authentically stamped cardboard tickets.
Arriving in St. Moritz, you have the chance to explore this exclusive resort, and enjoy the luxurious Alpine metropolis. Experience Corvatsch mountain hiking trails, the Glacier Grotto and Segantini Museum, celebrating the life and work of painter Giovanni Segantini. Twice hosting the Olympic Winter Games, St. Moritz is the apex of stylish skiing and winter walking trails, not to mention toboggan runs, a snowboard fun park, tandem parachute jumps, 350 km (219 mi) of pistes, the Swiss National Park, and the steepest start slope in Switzerland. The summer also attracts people such as hikers and mountaineers, those looking to do some windsurfing and sailing on the lakes, as well as people simply looking to enjoy the upscale hotels, spas and shops.
