According to tradition, Spanish treasure hunters forced an Arawak witch living on the banks of the Matibereon River to help them find hidden Arawak gold. She led them to a cave and promptly disappeared. The terrified Spaniards tried to escape, but they were engulfed in the river.

You won't encounter any gold or witches (probably), but rafting the Martha Brae is a delightful, leisurely float on the famed river. On a 30-foot (10-meter) bamboo raft, your guide will take you from Rafter's Village down a three-mile stretch of the waterway, narrating your journey and stopping for a refreshing swim.

The embarkment area is near Ocho Rios and its myriad of activities, including dive and dolphin interaction opportunities. Rafter’s Village itself makes for a fun afternoon, especially for families.
