Located in Montevideo’s Old Town, this Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art Museum features two permanent exhibition halls and one larger hall for rotating programs. The first permanent hall focuses on Uruguay Art and Archeology, showcasing artifacts from the country, while the other contains Pre-Columbian artifacts from different Latin American regions that are 3,000 years old. Conferences, seminars, workshops, educational exchanges and other events are often held by the museum. Moreover, because of its eclectic architecture and the advanced technology used during 1888 when it was constructed, the building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1986.

Unlike many museums and galleries in Uruguay, the permanent exhibits supply information in English. MAPI’s hours run from 11:30am to 5:30pm Monday through Friday, 10am to 4pm on Saturdays, and 12pm to 6pm on Sundays.
