Visiting the Moorea Plantations

Moorea's fertile landscape is covered in pineapple fields, the main agricultural product of the island, as well as coffee, vanilla and fruit plantations. Visitors can sample the island's harvests at village stores and road-side stands, or explore a plantation firsthand. One interesting plantation to explore is the Jus de Fruits de Moorea (Fruit Juices of Moorea).  While most people visit to see the factory, sample local juices and liquors and buy souvenirs, it is also possible to ask for a map to tour around the plantation itself and all its tropical fruits and plants, like pineapple, grapefruit, lemon, mango, noni, papaw, guava and vanilla.

There is also the Opunohu Agricultural School, which can be accessed on the way up to Belvedere Lookout on Belvedere Road. Visitors can enjoy a complimentary tour of a pineapple plantation and a vanilla plantation, hike onsite educational trails and sample fresh jams, juices and sorbets. And at Moorea Tropical Garden, which is full of fruit gardens, visitors can sample fresh fruit products. It is especially entertaining to sample the fruit ice cream -- we recommend banana vanilla -- as it is made to order using organic ingredients right in front of you. A tour of the grounds also includes a guided waterfall hike. Conveniently, visitors do not need to make an appointment to visit the school unless they want to talk to the Director.

To get to experience the best Moorea has to offer, including its many coffee plantations and pineapple fields, you may want to book a Moorea Circle Island and Belvedere Lookout Tour. Some highlights of the excursion include opportunities to see the fertile plantations and learn about agriculture from a knowledgeable guide, enjoying aerial views from Belvedere Lookout, exploring local villages like Papetoai and Maatea, artisanal shopping in Haapiti and visiting the tomb of the first missionaries.
