Sir Edmund Hillary was the father of New Zealand mountaineering, famous worldwide for conquering Mount Everest in 1953.
Hillary cut his mountaineering teeth in this region, and the museum is a tribute to his achievements and connection with the Mount Cook region.
Mount Cook was the Everest expedition’s training ground, including the famously difficult ascent of Mount Cook’s south face.
All this history and more is explored in the museum, including a 3D movie, photos and artifacts from Hillary’s climbing expeditions. Also at the alpine center don’t miss a session at the stunning full-dome digital planetarium, cinematically exploring the southern night sky.
