You can't come to Germany and not do this tour! The sites were beautiful and it was definitely worth going to the Linderhof Castle before Neuschwanstein. It's a long trek up, so take the bus up and walk back down. Your time is limited so you'll want to spend more time at the castle and then enjoy the view on the way back.
Bridget did a great job with this tour. It was comfortable, well organized and a beautiful day for November. The reason we give this tour only four stars is due to the castle tour of Neuschwanstein. The tours start every five minutes and give a very general overview of the castle. Little if anything is said about the many, many details of this castle. It really could have been done as an automatic ride like at Disneyworld. Our lunch at the restaurant was average at best and the waiter did become very angry and rude with a family that was in our tour. It seemed to simply be a "language issue" The climb up the hill was really not bad. Overall impression for Neuschwanstein - Disappointing! The stop at Oberammergau was nice but too short. We did manage a nice coffee and some excellent strudel before we hurried back to the bus. The tour of Linderhof was also very quick, but that was ok since it is a small castle. We do not regret that we did this day trip because it was on our places to see. Just be aware of the "cattle call" tour at the castle itself.
These beautiful castles are really a must-see. The Linderhof is smaller but more beautiful inside and out while the Neuschwanstein is bigger and really lives up to its name as a fairy tale castle.. Just be prepared for some 1.5 km walk uphill and another walk to the Marienbrucke in order to have the best view of the castle.
A very full day that I did enjoy.
Main negative was I didn't realise that entrance cost were not included and hence another 21 euro HOWEVER probably still reasonable for the full day. I would just rather pay up front as you wouldn't go on this day trip unless you intended to go inside the castles.
A very full bus - the usual suspects who didn't adhere to time frames and kept others waiting.
Linderhof castle in the morning - not enough time here - you arrived, waited in line for the toilet, quick walked up to the entrance to the castle, waited in line and then taken through the castle, out again and straight back to the bus. Lovely place and grounds looked beautiful and worth more time.
Onto Oberammagau - 45 minute visit and just the most wonderful town - next time will stay here.
Onto the Disney Castle - time for lunch in the village which is incredibly overpriced - takeaway hotdog or pizza is cheap and satisfying.
3 ways of getting to the Castle itself
walking - not for the faint hearted - you do need to be fit - I didn't attempt and so pleased I didn't as actually not sure I would have done it
horse and buggy - still a ten minute walk uphill when you arrive. reasonable price
- shuttle bus - 10 min walk downhill on arrival. Small charge
I did walk down and took me 30 minutes but worth it.
Weather was miserable - very foggy and didn't really lift however still a magical place
Lots and lots of walking once you arrive at Castle and you need to be able to walk up lots of stairs at one time - narrow spiral stairs and up numerous levels to start tour which was very interesting and worthwhile
Just a stunning place - appears easy to get to on your own and this would allow further time or a night here
Christine the guide was lovely, we set off slightly early at 8.15 and travelled approx 2 hours to Linderhof, we had approx 1 hour there and toured the castle, then we travelled approx another half hour and stopped at Oberamagau for a general look around - about 45 mins, it would have been nice for longer, it's very pretty, then we travelled another approx 45 mins to Neuschwanstein and had about an hour for lunch before our castle tour, plenty of time for that. We travelled up to the castle in the shuttle bus, you can walk or take a horse and carriage. The shuttle seemed best because it stops above the castle and you can then walk downhill plus you get to go on the bridge above the castle for great views! both castles are lovely and the tours are interesting, you cannot take photos or videos, you have to pay the tour guide 21 euros extra though. lunch is not included in the tour. you can buy water or beer on the coach. we got back to the city about 6.30
Linderhof and Neuschwantstein castles were beautiful. Both castles has it's own beauty.
The castles were wonderful, the areas were beautiful. It's easy to see why Ludwig II picked the areas he did to build his castles. Newschwanstein may have cost Bavaria all it's money, but has been a tourist draw for multiple years and will remain a tourist draw.
Linderhof is beautiful and the gardens beautiful.
I had a wonderful day touring the castles. The bus was comfortable, the guides were knowledgeable and accommodating and the sites were beautiful. It's a bit of a rush at Linderhof and you have to eat quickly at Neuschwanstein, but nothing that ruins the day. Well worth the money.
A real treat. The Linderhof Castle was great to see. So unlike King Ludwig II's other castles. Beautiful grounds and other amenities. Oberammergau was delightful. Not enough time to explore it however. Also we were there on a Sunday so most of the stores and shops were closed. Very picturesque.
This tour is a must do for anyone who has a day to spare while in Munich. It's a 10 hour day but so worth it. The guide (Bettina) and bus driver (Mikki) were great. I wish we could have spent more time at Linderhof rather than stopping at Oberammergau. We hiked the Pollat Schlucht trail to get to/from Neuschwanstein, which was wonderful. The only negative about the trip is no photos were allowed inside the castles.
My husband has wanted to see Neuschwanstein Castle forever - and it didn't disappoint! Linderhof was beautiful, too. The guide was very good and the whole tour ran smoothly.
This is a great way to see a lot of the German countryside without driving. It is an independent tour where you are with one large bus group going to the castles on the first day, another bus to Rothenburg on day 2, another group when departing Rothernburg, and another group when going to Hiedelberg. The only reason I did not give the trip 5 stars was an issue on the first day. When departing Munich, I showed my voucher to the tour guide and mentioned I was staying overnight in Hohenschwangau. However, while the bus was driving, the guide explained there were 4 buses going to the castles, so we were going to start in Hohenschwangau and finish in Linderhof. When I reminded the tour guide that I was supposed to be staying in Hohenschwangau, he was helpful, along with the staff at the Hotel Mueller in Hohenschwangau where we stopped first instead of last on the tour. The result was that all 66 people on this bus were rushed through Linderhof with no time to visit the grounds so that I could be dropped off in Oberamerggau to wait alone and catch the last public bus to Hohenschwangau while the tour bus returned to Munich. Despite this issue, the tour was amazing. The castles are a must-see, and it would be hard to see Neuschwanstein and Linderhof without driving yourself. The Romantic Road bus made multiple stops (which was a pleasant surprise) with 15 minutes in some stops and 45 minutes in others. The bus arrived in Rothenburg around 4:30 PM where a taxi took me to the hotel within the medieval walls of the city. There was plenty of time to spend in Rothenburg before being picked up the next day and getting back on the Romantic Road bus to Frankfurt. All of the hotels were nice. Overall a great trip – just make sure when you start in Munich that the tour guide knows you are not coming back to Munich with the rest of the bus, that the last stop is Hohenschwangau, and that the day 1 tour is not being done in reverse.
The experience was very cool.
But it could be more relaxing, because we were in a hurry in the visit of the Linderhof castle and then we had almost an hour for shopping in a little village!? We could enjoy more this castle.
Nevertheless this, it was good. The guide was very helpfull.
Thank you for the experience.
The castles were beautiful. The guide was very organized. Just felt very rushed at the castles and little town they stopped at for a half hour. Drop the little town and add time at the castles. We didn't get to even see the back of Linderhof nor all of the Neushwanstein castle because we were too rushed.
The castles were crowded, but that was understandable as it was the height of the season. The bus trip was very comfortable and the scenery was beautiful. Our tour guide was entertaining and strived very hard to accomodate everyone. It was great to go to both castles, although I would have liked more time at Linderhof to see the Grotto.
