Summer Activities in Munich
By Viator, May 2013
1. Relax in a beer garden
Munich’s beer gardens are legendary and with over 200 to choose from, you won’t have to walk far to get a cool drink. Spend a leisurely afternoon relaxing with a stein of home-brewed Bavarian beer in the shady gardens of the Englischer Garten; head to Munich’s oldest beer garden, Augustiner Keller; or visit the huge Hirschgarten, the largest beer garden in Bavaria, seating up to 8000 people.
2. Take a tour with a twist
Summer is the perfect time for a sightseeing tour of the city but make the most of the warm weather by swapping buses and taxis for different methods of getting around. Walking and cycling tours are popular ways to explore, or why not take a Munich City Tour by Segway? Another fun way to get around is to join the local Rollerblade nights held throughout the summer – the public skate-a-thons are held from 9pm each Monday night, starting from Theresienwiese.
3. Get a view
Munich’s Olympic Stadium opens its doors and its rooftop to visitors over the summer months, with guided tours allowing access to the glass rooftop canopy. Marvel at the expansive city views from the stadium rooftop or head to the nearby Blomberg Mountain for an even more awe-inspiring vista. While you’re there, visit to the mountain’s bob sled run, where you can try your hand at summer sledging.
4. Relax in the city’s parks
Explore the city’s most popular park with a picnic in the idyllic Englischer Garten, where you can walk or cycle around the gardens, take a horse and carriage ride around the park or join the surfers and sunbathers on the banks of the Isar River. Alternatively, head to the Feldmochinger Lake where swimming and volleyball are popular activities, or take a day trip to the Starnberg Lake flanked by some of Ludwig’s most impressive castles.
5. Summer festivals
For the most atmospheric time to visit the city, time your stay to coincide with one of Munich’s summer festivals. Check out the many music and theater events of the Tollwood Festival held over three weeks in Olympic Park or join the giant street party at the Christopher Street Day festival in July culminating in a vibrant 30,000-strong parade through the city center.
