Doing what: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
The Pompeii tour was great. our tour guide told us great anecdotes of life in Pompeii which was engaging for the kids (9 + 11 yo boys). He was also able to succinctly answer any questions people threw at him!
Lunch was nice (mozzarella pizza and a drink).
The trip to Vesuvius was alright. It is a bit of a hike up the hill, but there are cold drinks when you get there. It would have been great if we got some general information about volcanos (especially for the kids). Also, the tour guide didn't come up the mountain with us, she met us at the bottom. She answered questions people had when we returned. Kids were first up the mountain, but they didn't really enjoy the experience that much!

Doing what: Pompeii Day Trip from Rome
The guide, Patrice, was excellent as was the guide in Pompeii. The bus and driver, Francisco, were great. You need to be to cope with the roads and traffic. The Pompeii tour was great and commentary very informative and full of humour. The lunch of limp salad and burnt pizza was not the best. The trip up Mt Vesuvius was interesting but not as spectacular as I was anticipating. Perhaps because our 'recent' volcanoes, Tarawera and Tongariro are still alive and full of colour. The 'pit stops' each way were too crowded and rushed to achieve much.

Doing what: Naples Shore Excursion: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
Collected by private car from cruise dock at Naples but then had to wait over 30 minutes to be reunited with coach tour after being told that we would only be waiting 2 minutes. Tour round Pompeii was informative but tour guide had a very strong italian accent which was hard to follow. We explained that we had to be back at the cruise dock no later than 5.30pm or we would miss our ship, booking instructions were never passed on!! We reminded them again when we stopped for a pizza lunch as we felt that it was extremely leisurely considering the time restraints. Vesuvius was magnificent although we were left to our own devices. No tour or management. A majority of tour did not climb the volcano which is not for the feint hearted. We were told it would take 30 minutes to go up and 20 minutes to come down. We regularly swim and go to the gym and managed 17 minutes up and 10 minutes down. Our 18 year old 6ft 4 water polo playing son did it in 12 minutes up and 10 minutes down!! After getting to the bottom our tour organisers waited for an hour whilst the drivers sat around eating icecreams! We were getting extremely worried by this stage as it was obvious it was going to be a close thing as to whether we got there in time for our ship. Eventually the mini bus dropped us off a mile away from the cruise dock at 5.30pm!! We ran the whole way dodging through traffic in temperatures exceeding 27C. I am 47 my husband 56 and recently had a cartilage operation. Luckily another tour group were delayed or ship would have sailed. Would never use again, very poor value!

Doing what: Pompeii Day Trip from Rome
Pompeii is probably the best preserved and largest site (nearby Ostia is a good alternative if you don't have a full day for this excellent tour). Our guide (sorry I forgot his name ??Enzo??) was excellent, knowledgeable and funny. He explained the layout of the Port city and took us to several of the most interesting sites at Pompeii: the area with artefacts, a soup kitchen, typical family dwelling, bakery, the ancient water system, the red-light district of Pompeii and the temple of Apollo, Our time at Pompeii felt too short (2 hours went by fast) and left me wanting more. Our time at Vesuvius was similarly short. Walking to the very top took almost 30 minutes (for those in good physical shape) and a similar time back down (due to the steep grade), it didn't leave much time for looking at the volcano itself. We had an excellent day for viewing the volcano crater (only light clouds that passed by quickly). Wear good shoes (no sandals) as the ground is pebbly and loose underfoot. Do not to take the walking stick offered at the bottom, you get better momentum walking up hill swinging both arms. Carrying the stick becomes a nuisance after a while and is useless on the way down. Also buy your postcards and trinkets after your return so you don't have to carry anything extra. The bus ride was long (3 hours each way) but air conditioned and we had a coffee/bathroom stop halfway which was very appreciated. It was a long day but worth it. If you have time and want to see one of the best preserved ancient sites definitely book this tour. It was amazing!

Doing what: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
It was the first time I had booked anything through VIA TOUR but it went off without a hitch. Our driver picked us up at the cruise line port and then headed off to the hotel in downtown Naples to pick up other passengers which did take a bit of time but it sure gave us a good insight of life in the Heart of Naples. We then headed off tp the village of Pompeii. There seemed to be a bit of confusion on the amount of guests and scheduling between us on the boat and the others at the hotel. The guide was working it out but did not let that interupt our tour through Pompeii. Our guide was fantastic and he truly gave us a parallel connection of life back then to now and how life is still the same but different. Very cool. We then went for a quick pizza lunch and a beer whichwas included. The pizza was ok but we were hungry and ate it up. We then went up to Mt Vesuvius. It is a good drive up the mountain and then once we arrived the tour guide knew we were pressed for time so he pionted us to the stair way to climb up the volcano and left us with specific time and meeting point to ensure we would return to the ship on time. We made our very steep climb up the volcano and reached the crater to take amazing pictures. We actually took many pictures as we climbed up the volcano as the vue's were spectacular. Reaching the top was very exhilerating. We were very happy with our tour and experiences and they were not yet over. We had 45min very fast drive back to the ship! Travel agent K

this trip was absolutely brilliant - the tour guide was patrice - she was knowledgeable and we had already done a previous trip with her to the vatican - the pompei was a longish drive but well worth it - the local guide was brilliant, funny and knw everything about pompeii for he hadbeen born there - very good tour & well worth vist - local dispute meant we could not go to vesuvius but went to live volcanonstead which was awesome!!

Doing what: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
The tour of Pompeii was fun but I wish we had head sets so we could hear the tour guide while wandering around to explore. Lunch was not great... the pizza was not good. We expected much more from Naples. The ride up to Mt. Vesuvius was very windy, so if you suffer from car sickness, then you may have some trouble. I was unable to make it to the top of the volcano because my ears started really hurting from the altitude. But I heard from the others that it was very cool at the top. Though there are some improvements that could be made I would still recommend this tour.

great day! pompeii is not to be missed, truly something amazing. mt. vesuvius was great too. the bus takes you up most of the way, and then you take a semi steep walk to the top, about 20 minutes up and 20 down. the air is delicious at the top, and being able to look into the crater of the volcano was very cool.

Doing what: Pompeii Day Trip from Rome
The only negative to this was that the Vesuvius tourism workers went on strike the day we were going to visit, so we could not do the hike. However, Viator substituted a trip to the Volcano Sulfrada, which was possibly even more engaging.

Doing what: Pompeii Day Trip from Rome
Excellent and when else will you get the chance to climb an active volcano and to see the actual excavation site of Pompeii. Both guides that we had one for VesuviusRome and the other in Pompeii were excellent. Our reason for not giving an overall excellent rating is the time involved. It was a 3-plus hour bus trip there and the same coming back! 6 hours is a long time to give up for transit while on vacation. I recommend you dump the bus and change to train service instead with coach in Napoli to get to Vesuvius and Pompeii it would be much quicker and will save lots of time.

Doing what: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
First of all, I like that they sent a confirmation the day before for the meeting place and time. We opted to do a hotel pick up which was very convenient. We were picked up at 1030am by the guide Andrew who is very excellent and animated. Our group of 10 took a van to Pompeii first and we were guided on a tour by Andrew. He provided excellent detail and history of the ruins and we even had a few other people tag along while we were there since it was so interesting. In the afternoon, half of the passengers left to return to Naples since they didnt join the Mt Vesuvius tour. The rest of us had a very nice pizza and drink at the nearby restaurant that seemed to be very popular. The second half of the tour involved a drive up Mt Vesuvius and then a half hour hike to the top. Here, we were self-guided since its a one-way path up the side of the volcano. You dont need to be overly active but hiking up and back in an hour was the bare minimum time required. The views from Mt Vesuvius are great. Bamboo hiking sticks are provided free of charge at the start of the hike or for a tip. There are also short refreshment stations where you can buy souvenirs and rest along the way. There arent as many benches to sit on further up. If its a sunny day, definitely bring a hat and sunscreen. Overall, the Pompeii Tour is definitely worth seeing and the guide made it much more fun. Mt Vesuvius is one of those things which is neat to do if you want to say youve been to the top of an active dormant volcano. We arrived back

Doing what: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
It was better than I imagined! Our hosts and guide were helpful and switched on to our every need and you did not need to ask any questions as it was just not needed. Everything was explained in a way so animated you watched him and not the scenery and he got you excited about the intricacies of the Roman/Latin origin of today's spoken English words and where they were born. Passion is the only way to accommodate this guide, not to mention the Italian looks! We were pleasantly surprised too by the lack of tourists at Pompeii, perhaps we were just lucky on the day. The water was sweet from the fountains and refreshed us on our walk around the various sites. Lunch was very nice Margarita pizza with a spooky twist as my wife found out, lets say the world is a very small place even with 6.5 Billion people! Vesuvius the volcano was big, lovely views especially the day we were there, and the cooling breeze made it one of those perfect days. Sadly even though the area is designated a national park you find yourself looking at the rubbish on the road to the car park. I think someone in authority in the area should limit the size of the coaches using the road as the tight bends and frequent traffic made it slow going behind a large coach, so limiting your time on the creators edge. Apart from that wow!

Doing what: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
Our tour guide was fantastic! He knew volumes about Pompeii and was a very passionate and enthusiastic guide, making the experience very enjoyable. Lunch consisted of a Margherita pizza and a drink of choice including beer. The restaurant was nice and the food was good. The climb up Vesuvius was definitely tiring. Do not try to do this if you are not relatively fit. The climb is pretty tough because of the steep gradient and slippery mountain surface, and the view into the volcano in Summer isn't spectacular, just a big pit of dirt and rock! However it is worth it for the view of the coastline. I would highly recommend this tour. Pompeii is a must, but skip Vesuvius if you are unfit or unsure.

Doing what: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
Our guide was marvelous. Vesuvius and Pompeii were places I had wanted to visit for many years. They were better than I had imagined. In Australia I was informed that as Vesuvius was not an extinct volcano some tour operators would not take the risk of going there!

Doing what: Mt Vesuvius and Pompeii Day Trip from Naples
Absolutely wonderful tour! There was a little confusion on where we would be picked up but we were helped by a very nice Italian man who called the company on his cell phone and straightened out the directions. There were only three of us in our tour and our guide was very informative in Pompeii. It would have been nice to spend more time in Pompeii but there is no way we could have navigated around Pompeii and seen all we did see in the time allotted if we had not had a guide. The lunch that we received was delicious and the atmosphere of the restaurant was fabulous. The trip up to Vesuvius was only a short ride away but the walk to the top is strenuous to say the least! The pathway is all volcanic rock and straight up. I suggest renting a walking stick from the vendor there if you don't have your own, it will make the trek a little easier. All in all it was a very informative experience and I would recommend it to anyone who feel they are in good enough shape to hike straight up to the top of a volcano.
