3 Days in Naples: Suggested Itineraries

For centuries Naples has been renowned across Europe for its history, colorful street life and great food. Once the largest city in Europe, Naples has inspired the likes of Caravaggio and Pliny , as well as providing a home for stars like Sophia Loren. Its seems as though Naples has been controlled by almost every major power of the last thousand years, including the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the French, the Spanish and the Germans, so its brimming full of historical sites – none more famous than the Roman city of Pompeii, which was famously destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Day 1:  Coach Trip

Wind through the streets of Naples with great views from an open top bus, complete with commentary. The bus has three different routes, stopping at all of the best sights Naples has to offer, so this is the perfect opportunity to see the whole of the city in one day. Enjoy a vast collection of Italian art, including The Flagellation of Christ by Caravaggio at the Museu di Capodimonte and while you’re there take in the view of the Bay of Naples from the large hunting gardens.

Day 2:  Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii

Take a day trip up through the city of Pompeii, which was famously destroyed by Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. During your tour of the ruins, you’ll be taken to the Forum, the Baths and the Brothel, to give you a sense of what Roman life was like. After a pizza lunch, take a hike up to the top of Mount Vesuvius to walk around the crater and take in the panoramic views.

Day 3:  The Bay of Naples

To get away from the busy city, try heading to the Bay of Naples for fantastic views and Roman spas. Many of the spas are built into caves next to an extinct volcano and in the past Romans used to come to bathe in the hot springs. You can also arrange boat trips to the picturesque islands along the Amalfi Coast, such as Capri and Ischia, to get in touch with a more quaint style of living.

Doing what: Capri Day Trip with Lunch from Naples

This was a very enjoyable day. The scenery was spectacular, and I recommend the chairlift ride for fabulous views. We were able to go out to the Blue Grotto which was well worth it, but the extra cost was not 9-10 euros, but 13.50 pp to get out to the cave, then 12.50 euros pp to go inside the cave, so make sure you have enough cash. I travelled with my teenage son and we both thoroughly enjoyed the trip.
