Naples is one of Italy’s biggest (and most interesting) cities, but because it’s south of Rome it often falls off the radar of most visitors. This is a shame, not least because from a home base in Naples you can take day trips to some of Italy’s most popular and most visited attractions.

Here are some of the day trips from Naples that you could take.

Pompeii

One of Italy’s – and, indeed, the world’s – most famous archaeological sites, Pompeii is an easy day trip from Naples. Mount Vesuvius, the volcano responsible for burying the historic town of Pompeii, looms over Naples – and Pompeii lies just on the other side. You can take the train from Naples’ central station for a DIY trip, or book a guided visit that includes a tour of the site itself.
