Comment from Philippa Burne
1) Alkmaar
In the north of the country, the main attraction here is the Kaasmarkt, or cheese market, in front of the medieval weighing house on the Waagplein. One of the last remaining traditional cheese markets in The Netherlands, it runs from the beginning of April until the beginning of September on Fridays from 10am until 12:30pm. You can buy cheese from the many surrounding stalls. Alkmaar also has many other medieval builidings plus windmills, a cheese museum and a beer museum.
