Being such an important port, Rotterdam was heavily bombed in World War II and many of its historic buildings were destroyed, thus the modern city we see today. To see old Rotterdam head to the neighborhood of Delfshaven alongside the river. This is the area that the pilgrims sailed from when they headed to America in 1620.
