Windmills in the Netherlands

Comment from Philippa Burne

Windmills in the Netherlands
The Netherlands are damp. There is no getting around the fact that a large portion of the land lies beneath sea level and the Dutch needed to get very, very good at draining the earth to make it liveable. Naturally there are therefore a lot of canals and dikes to keep the water in the canals.

There are also a lot of windmills and the image of a windmill is one of the first things that springs to mind when people say: Holland, Dutch or Netherlands. Windmills, cheese and clogs. There are over a thousand still fully functioning windmills in the Netherlands. They are squat with large sails and most still need to be hand-turned to face the wind, unlike English and other windmills which have tails to steer them around.
