Café du Monde, recognizable by its green-and-white striped awning on Decatur Street across the street from Jackson Square, is the city’s premier place to be “French.” At all times of the day, the tables are full of visitors feasting on the café’s famous beignets and chicory coffee.
A beignet, basically “fried dough” in French, is a deep-fried square, doughnut-like pastry topped with powdered sugar. Served warm, they are nothing short of heavenly. Add a cup of coffee made with chicory and you have yourself the quintessential New Orleans breakfast or afternoon snack.
While away some time on the café’s patio, people-watching and shading yourself from the hot Southern sun. The 24-hour café, which was first established as a coffee stand in the French Market in 1862, is only closed on Christmas Day.
