Byron Bay
Located roughly 500 miles (805 km) north of Sydney, Byron Bay was named by Captain James Cook after John Byron: circumnavigator of the world and grandfather of the immortal poet, Lord Byron. The local aboriginal name for the area is reputedly Cavvanbah. Possessed of popular surfing beaches, the area is a mecca for recreational enthusiasts. It is also popular with skydivers, backpackers and tourists interested in logging some quality time whale-watching.

The area is a popular area for scuba diving and snorkeling, most notably at Julian Rocks, which is part of the recently established Cape Byron Marine Park. The best spots are a short jaunt from the main beach via boat, and guides and tours are easy to find.

Byron Bay also lies close to some awesome subtropical rainforests. Nightcap National Park and beautiful Minyon Falls are well within striking distance.

Other areas of interest include the Cape Byron Lighthouse, built in 1901; Two Sisters Rocks at Broken Head (south of Byron Bay); Broken Head Nature Reserve (south of Byron Bay); Brunswick Heads Nature Reserve and Julian Rocks Nature Reserve.

Owing to the phenomenon known as Schoolies Week (when high school kids flock to the coast at the end of the year) and other annual events, it is a good idea to book accommodations well in advance.

A few of the aforementioned events include yoga retreats, pagan gatherings, the East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival at Easter, the Byron Bay Writers Festival, the Byron Bay Film Festival and the Byron Underwater Festival.
