Normandy is a land of tradition, of quintessential grey farmhouses rising out of rolling green pastures, of black-berried hedgerows lining patchwork fields of artichokes, cauliflower and corn.
It's a land of apples and crustaceans, of generous meals, half-timbered houses and honest fishing villages where deep rural countryside meets the bracing sea.
Normandy is a land steeped in history, the subject of successive invasions and decisive battles, a place where monasteries rise up from the sea and where tapestries recount historical watersheds.

Drive to Pointe du Hoc, where the infamous German gun position threatened the Allied ships. The site with its huge fortification blown to pieces is as it was when the Rangers left it and looks like a lunar landscape. Pointe du Hoc is one of the favorite stops for many visitors to Normandy.
Suggested Itineraries in Normandy
At 7:10am on June 6 1944, 225 US Army Rangers scaled the 100-foot (30m) cliffs at Pointe du Hoc, where the Germans had a battery of huge artillery guns.
The site, which France turned over to the US Government in 1979, looks much as it did half a century ago. The ground is still pockmarked with bomb craters. Visitors can walk among and inside the German fortifications, but they are warned not to dig: mines and explosive materials may remain below the surface.
