Inter-island Trips from Oahu
Inter-island flights from Oahu are a great way to expand your vacation experience and see more of Hawaii. The islands offer national park beauty, volcanic landscapes and coastal vistas, and the flight times are ridiculously short - it takes just 40 minutes or so to fly from Oahu to either Maui, the Big Island or Kauai. Inter-island day trips from Oahu are typically the complete package, including return flights, informative guided commentary, taxes and air-conditioned coach transport.

Kauai from Oahu

Known as the Garden Isle and flaunting its volcanic origins, the island of Kauai provides perhaps the biggest contrast to Oahu. Kauai's waterfalls and rivers are legendary, as the island receives most of the planet’s rainfall. Scenic Waimea Canyon is the highlight of a visit, formed by the pounding waters of the Wailua River. A Kauai island tour also reveals fern grottoes, palm groves and sugar mills, lava tubes and Polynesian landmarks.

Big Island from Oahu

If you want to see volcanoes, fly to Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island to see where Kilaueau has recently spouted red lava. A black lava trail leads across a black sand beach, where you might see steam or even lava flowing into the sea. Away from the craters and lava tubes, you'll also see waterfalls, orchids and laidback Hawaiian sugarcane towns on a tour of the Big Island.

Maui from Oahu

The island of Maui, Hawaii's second-largest island, is dominated by the red soil crater of huge, dormant Haleakala, Polynesian for 'House of the Sun'. Hikers make a beeline for Haleakala, with trails leading right into the crater from the summit, and witnessing the sun rise or set over the volcano is a must-do if you're staying on Maui.

There's also history on Maui in the old whaling town of Lahaina, and you'll see that agriculture thrives in the rich volcanic soils as you drive past fields of flowers and sugarcane. Another way to tour Maui is to follow the coastal Hana Highway along the island's east coast, an undulating stretch of beaches and rainforest-clad cliffs traced by waterfalls. The scenic route runs for 68 miles (109 km) from Kahului to Hana, a winding trip of around three hours over bridges and narrow curves.

Doing what: Big Island Day Trip: Volcanoes National Park from Oahu

Our day started off cloudy but the weather improved before lunch. Our guide was very informative in a casual way. She kept an eye on everyone and was friendly and helpful. The places we visited were good and we had ample time to see everything and take lots of pictures.Lunch was ok but my husband said his hamburger tasted funny and he became ill about an hour after. Another lady said her salad had an insect in it. The Macadamia farm and the Orchid farm were wonderful. Our guide spent plenty of time in the lava fields. On the way home she told island ghost stories which we all enjoyed. Tho on the pricey side it was well worth it.
