Outdoor Activities in Palm Cove
By Viator, October 2013
The World Heritage listed Daintree Rainforest lies right on the doorstep of Palm Cove. Lush, tropical trees and shrubs, iconic native Australian wildlife, and deep gorges combine to create the ultimate outdoor experience. Be sure not to miss Mossman Gorge when visiting the Daintree. A guided tour will give you information about the cultural history of the gorge, as well as a rundown of bush foods and medicines in the area.
Cruise the Daintree River to spot crocodiles and see the abundant birdlife, and make sure to stop in at Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas to see rare and endangered Australian species like the Cassowary and tree-kangaroo, and some more well-known natives such as koalas, crocodiles and native birds. For more of an adventure-filled day, a 4WD Tour of the Daintree will take you off the beaten track, or try your hand at ziplining through the rainforest to really get your adrenaline levels up.
The Atherton Tablelands lie just over 100km from Palm Cove, but the drive is well worth it. An eco tour of the area will see you exploring the rainforest and waterfalls, spotting endangered tree kangaroos and platypus, marvelling at some of Australia’s tallest trees, and exploring the castle-like ruins of Paronella Park. A lake in an extinct volcano crater and swimming at the base of Millaa Millaa Falls complete this amazing outdoor experience.
To really get a feel for the landscapes of the tropical far north, a full day horse riding or ATV adventure will take you through rainforest, mangroves and sugar cane fields – not to mention along a beach or two! Spot plenty of native birdlife, and perhaps even a crocodile whilst taking in the variety of landscapes the region has to offer.
