Planning a trip to Palm Cove? Chances are you like swimming, diving, fishing and/or sailing! The translucent blue Coral Sea is what it’s all about here – landlubbers need not apply. Further afield, scenic routes lead to yet more coastal delights: the world’s oldest living rainforest, exotic islands, a certain technicolor reef.
Day 1: Dazzling Daintree
After rising early for a refreshing morning swim or a spot of fishing off Palm Cove’s popular jetty, head north to Daintree National Park. Spread over two distinct areas – the inland Mossman Gorge and the coastal Cape Tribulation sections – the Daintree is one of Australia’s most loved national parks. Ancient rainforest, mountains, mangroves and native animals will ensure your visit here is unforgettable. Take a wildlife-spotting cruise along the Daintree River, stroll Cape Tribulation’s scenic boardwalks, and marvel at the spectacular views from Rex Lookout. Aspiring action hero? Test your mettle on the tough Mount Sorrow Ridge hiking trail. The Daintree also has a rich Indigenous heritage: join a guided tour to learn about traditional hunting techniques and bush tucker secrets.
Day 2: Wonders of the Reef
One of the world’s seven Natural Wonders, the Great Barrier Reef stretches almost 1,245 miles (over 2,000km) along Queensland’s coast. With its brilliantly colored corals, azure waters, extensive marine life and alluring tropical islands, there’s really no contest: this is one of Australia’s key attractions. Divers and snorkelers can swim with sea turtles, manta rays, fish, dolphins, dugongs, whales and sharks, while sun-worshippers can bask on the silky sands of iconic beach paradises like Dunk or Hitchenbrook Islands. Put the Reef’s massive magnificence into perspective with a scenic helicopter tour, or sail the impossibly beautiful Whitsundays on a chartered yacht. Just be warned: after experiencing the magic of the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll never be the same…
Day 3: Adventure Central
Need a buzz? The Tropical Coast is tailor-made for thrill-seekers, with all the adrenalin-fueled outdoor activities your heart can handle! Go bungy-jumping in lush rainforest, or brave the high-speed Minjin Jungle Swing. Get wet rafting the wild, whitewater rapids of the Tully River or diving with giant clams and thousands of fish amidst colorful reef off Michaelmas Cay. Like mingling with the locals when you’re on holiday? Get up close and personal with saltwater crocodiles on a lagoon cruise, or simply rise above it all on a hot-air balloon ride above the stunning Atherton Tablelands. Worn out yet? You’re not the only one!
