Built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 World Fair, held to commemorate the centennial of the Revolution, the Eiffel Tower (Tour Eiffel) was the world's tallest structure at 1,050 feet (320 m) until Manhattan's Chrysler Building was completed.

Initially opposed by Paris' artistic and literary elite, the Eiffel Tower was almost torn down in 1909. The tower's salvation came when it proved an ideal platform for the antennas needed for the new science of radiotelegraphy.

Today, the highlight of a visit are the views over Paris. When you're done peering upward through the girders, three levels are open to the public.

Just southeast of the Eiffel Tower is a grassy expanse that was once the site of the world's first balloon flights and is now used by teens as a skateboarding arena and by activists stating their views on the current state of France.

Awesome! Excellent and highly recommended for a wonderful night out in Paris. Best thing is that the tour bus will take you back to your hotel at the end of the night, which, at 2am or so is a good thing! The dinner and river cruise was wonderful, and the food was high quality - surprising for just an hour's trip, but just the right amount. The Eiffel Tower pass enabled us to go straight up in the express lift, and the night views from there were superb. *Remember where the wharf is when you go into the tower, so you know where to find the bus again afterwards*. The Moulin Rouge was the highlight of the evening. Magnificent show, and with champagne included in the tour price (get the half-bottle - much better value), it made it just a little bit more special. Well organised and planned throughout, couldn't fault the tour at all - definitely a must-do for first time visitors to Paris!

The best way to see the Eiffel Tower. Just like the advertisement says - "skip the line"
But more than that, it was well led . We learned a lot from our guide Jess. So do yourself a favor book this tour don't go it alone you still get plenty of time to explore on your own once your one the towers. I must say that even though I've traveled a lot and am not afraid to venture out on my own. The tours I booked in advance ran so much better than my wanderings . I'm ready to come back to Paris and will use Viator for my navigation. It's the way to go.

We booked this Eiffel Tower tour through Viator , not knowing what to expect.
But, my sister Lesley and i had an absolutely fabulous tour of the tower and surrounding areas.
Connor , our superb guide, told us the history of the tower and which places of interest to visit during our short stay in Paris.
We took Connor up on his recommendations the following day - and had the best time ever.

Practical Info

Take metro lines 6 or 9 to stop Bir Hakeim or Trocadero or RER line C to station Champ de Mars. There are elevators to the top of the Eiffel Tower - prices vary depending on how high you go - but they have long queues. Guided visits are also available.
