Translated from Hokkien the Kek Lok Si Temple, or 'Temple of Serene Bliss', sits majestically on a hill, a focal point of the local Chinese community, generous donations mean this temple continues to grow.
The 7-story white & gold pagoda is the largest Buddhist temple in SE Asia, its design - Chinese Octagonal base, Thai middle tier and Burmese crown - reflects its respects to Mahayana and Theravana Buddhism.
On the hillside above is an impressive 30m / 100ft bronze statue of Kuan Yin - Goddess of Mercy.

Doing what: Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple Afternoon Tour
The guide was brilliant, such a nice man and very knowledgeable. The temple was just amazing. We were let down by the weather whilst up Penang Hill but you could appreciate what the views would be like during good weather. Guide also made sure we had the best seats going up and down the hill which was a real plus. I would highly recommend this tour and the guide.
I also did the Island half day tour in the morning. This tour again was really good (amazing scenary) although Snake Temple was a bit of a let down. Despite this the trip is still very much worth doing.

Doing what: Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple Afternoon Tour
Our driver arrived on time and was pleasant, courteous and careful; the car was clean and comfortable. Particularly enjoyed Kek Lok Si. Since our driver was Buddhist he was able to explain everything which really enhanced our enjoyment of the visit. Only negative was that the local company insisted we hand over our entrance tickets. My daughter wanted to keep hers as a souvenir and I had to email the company to confirm that we had both visited the temple so that our driver would not have to pay some 30 RM. I thought this was petty. But, other than that, a very enjoyable afternoon.
Practical Info
Kek Lok Si Temple is situated on the spiritually revered hills in Ayer Itam, out past the western suburbs of Pulau Penang / Georgetown. It is much celebrated and decorated with a sea of lanterns around the month of Chinese New Year.
