Pennsylvania
Trip Planning & Itineraries
In a region of the country where it's possible to drive through six or seven little states in just one day, Pennsylvania - which is 309 miles (497km) across and 38 times larger than nearby Rhode Island - is one massive rectangle.
Cosmopolitan cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh may be what get most play. But a journey across its middle is far from monotonous. It's more like a fascinating minidrive across the country, as you'll truly encounter a little taste of everything that makes America what it is.

Suggested Itineraries: Pennsylvania
Ever since Ed Rendell, mayor from 1992 to 1999 and now governor of Pennsylvania, picked Philadelphia up by its lapels, gave it a good dusting and sent it out, polished, for all the world to see, the city has become one cool place to be.
Still mired in its steelworker reputation in most Americans' minds, Pittsburgh is a surprisingly hip, fun, cultured and beautiful city.
Occupying the northeast corner of Pennsylvania, the Poconos contain 2400 sq miles of mountains, streams, waterfalls, lakes and forests, making it a beautifully natural getaway at anytime during the four seasons.

This European-style oldie sits close to Rittenhouse Square, and a few of the rooms on the highest floors provide a glimpse of the park. The staff are friendly and helpful, but rooms are diminutive and garishly coloured.
The Westin Convention Center Pittsburgh
The tallest, most imposing of the high-rise hotels in the downtown district, the Westin offers great special rates throughout the year, along with wonderfully anonymous rooms that feature comfortable beds and puffy down comforters and a sleek, sophisticated style. It's a two-minute walk to the gay-bar district, and just a slightly longer jaunt to The Strip.
Penn's View Hotel Philadelphia
The independently owned Penn's View Hotel is an old-fashioned inn overlooking a freeway and the Delaware River. Rooms feature Chippendale-style furniture, and many rooms have exposed-brick walls and fireplace. You must investigate the wine bar. For many, this exceedingly well-stocked bar and the hotel's convenient access to Old City are the big draws.
