Perth Wine Tours

Picturesque Perth, capital of Australia's largest state, Western Australia, is a magnet for people seeking the good life – brilliant coastline, ocean-fresh seafood and a renowned wine scene.

Wine enthusiasts in search of a gourmet break can happily spend days exploring the various wineries of the region, most of which are conveniently located in the southwestern tip of the state.

There are three main wine regions close to Perth – Swan Valley, Margaret River and the Great Southern. The Swan Valley is Western Australia's historical centre for wine production, but these days it's Margaret River and the Great Southern regions that are drawing the major crowds.

The Swan Valley is hot, hot, hot – in fact, the hottest wine region in Australia, with an early grape harvest (in January). It produces grape varieties such as Verdelho, Chenin Blanc, and Chardonnay. You can get a thorough grip on the area with a wining, dining day cruise from Perth like our Swan Valley Wine Cruise, or you could have dinner with a difference with our sunset Swan Valley Cruise and Vineyard Dinner.

The Margaret River wine region is utterly delightful to tour, with a breezy, almost Mediterranean climate thanks to the proximity of the Indian Ocean. Here the main grape varieties cultivated include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sémillion, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Get right under the (grape)skin of this region with a 2-Day Margaret River Wine Experience Tour – because regions like this shouldn't be rushed.

You're going to need some serious time if you want to truly explore the Great Southern region – it's Australia's largest at 200 km (124 mi) wide and 100 km (62 mi) high, but it's broken into five sub-regions - the Porongurups, Mount Barker, Albany, Denmark and Frankland River – so maybe just tackle one at a time. With a similar, slightly drier climate to Margaret River, this enormous, diverse region produces excellent Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Shiraz, and Malbec.

Now picture yourself – a glass of straw-gold chardonnay in one hand, perhaps a small wedge of gourmet cheese from the cellar door in the other, as the sun sets and a breeze skims off the ocean… really, what are you waiting for?

Doing what: Swan Valley Cruise and Vineyard Dinner from Perth

I booked this trip as a surprise present for my niece's birthday. She and her husband had a wonderful time and really enjoyed the cruise. A spectacular finale was when they passed Burswood just as the Chinese New Year firework display was starting!
