Turin, which touts itself as Europe's capital of baroque, is a gracious city of wide boulevards, elegant arcades and grand public buildings.

Captivating Lake Maggiore is stunning in parts, although its shores are flatter and less spectacular than its pre-Alpine counterparts. Stresa is the main lakeside town.

Genoa doesn't display its charms so easily, but given the chance to wander, explore and discover this historic, cosmopolitan and fascinating port town, you're sure to be won over.
