We really enjoyed the tour except for the fact you need to have at least two people with the group; one of our group was almost pick pocketed because they did not recognize the tactics used by pick pockets. The tour guides should have known the tactics and passed that information on the tour participants.
Although the guide attempts to inform you about the surrounding buildings, it's the leaning tower you're really there to see....and it's worth it.
Love this tour! Guide with a great sense of humour and did not feel he needed to give us every fact available on the Pisa. If going to the area the tour up the tour is a must, very strange being on an sloping floor and even stranger when up the top!
Just what it was supposed to be, a good overview of the City. I always do Hop-on-Hop-offs whenever I go to someplace new to get the lay of the land.
Doing what: Pisa City Hop-on Hop-off Tour
We have taken this tour before, so we were a little disappointed the guide could not take us into the church, although we did enjoy the walk over into the town of Pisa to see some of those attractions.
If you have not seen Pisa it is a must do. However the coach lets you down.
As others have pointed out, not enough time was given to cover the small town of Pisa. The tour was very rushed, especially if you plan on climbing the tower. Viator could have added another hour to sightseeing. As it was, the distance driving was almost a total of 2.5 hours.
Spent an hour walking around the bus terminal looking for our group! Never found them! Meeting place is huge and confusing.
Excellent tour. We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Our tour guide was outstanding and really took good care of us.
We were picked up on time at a very easy location to find near the main train station and bus lines. Our tour guide was fantastic and provided a ton of interesting facts during the drive to Pisa. Once there, we were set up with another tour guide who was a local and walked us throughout the town. We had plenty of time to get back to the tower and do the climb up. It was so cool! Great views and pictures! We wish that we had another 30 minutes to walk through the cathedral and baptistry, but overall, it was still great!
Pisa was amazing! There was not much "free" time when we got there after doing the tour. The actual tour could have been missed as it was not all that interesting, and the local guide was quite rude and abrupt. The tour took us away from the leaning tower and down little back streets that were not interesting at all. Would have been better if we had not done the tour and just had our own time there to explore. The climb to the top was worth while but would recommend going there on your own if possible and not doing the tour with the local guides. The bus ride there however was very well organised and the lady was very nice, but the local tour and tour guide let it down.
You really don't need more than 1.5 hours in Pisa. Plan for 30 minutes to climb the tour and an hour to explore the cathedral and baptistery. The tour is well planned, with one exception. The local tour guides that meet you there walk you around the square and tour the OUTSIDE. They do not escort you into the cathedral or baptistery, but talk about it. Then they want to take you off the square and give you a walking tour of Pisa streets. Honestly, my husband and I ditched the tour at this point because you don't have much time allotted with the tour to take the famous pictures with Pisa. And we wanted to go inside the cathedral. So unfortunately, if you want to explore the INSIDE buildings of the square and climb the tower, you have to ditch the tour guide. So I would recommend the company plan things a little better so people don't feel they have to do this. Otherwise, 1/2 day is perfect... don't plan on more for Pisa.
Believe me this is all there is to see in Pisa. We drove from south of Siena for what we could see in about an hour on our own. While the guide was extremely good (once we found him- we were where we were told to be and had to call back to the tour operator twice; we were 20 minutes early, yet had to catch up with him during the tour) and funny, as well as informative there just was not that much to see. But, if you are spending more than 45 minutes to get there, don't go unless you REALLY want to see the tower.
I recently did a tour of Italy and had 6 tours lined up. Out of all 6 tours, this was by far the worst. I understand 1 star is harsh, but when half of the entire group (which consisted of 15-20 people) was complaining, that is never a good sign. The tour guide herself was "OK" but really never gave any intimate stories that you cant get out of history books, however there were several problems with this tour.
1) Skipping the Line for the Leaning Tower of Pisa - Its not necessary skipping the line, but a "scheduled time" which isn't explained to you until the END of the tour, in which we do on our FREE TIME. Besides, if there is a long line, it goes by fairly quickly.
2) The tour doesn't take you in the Baptistry or Cathedral. Sure, she explained the history of both buildings, but its terrible that we had to go buy separate tickets to enter both building.
3) there was no tour of the cemetery. again, you have to buy separate tickets... its actually very interesting, if we knew what we were looking at.
Overall, I would highly suggest not doing a tour at the Leaning Tour of Pisa. If you find a cheap tour and want to know the history... sure... at 45 dollars per person, you get an hour history lesson.
We found this tour excellent, what made it for us was the fact that though we had an elderly person in a wheelchair, the driver and assistant were very friendly and helpful, he was the only driver that took the trouble to deploy the wheelchair ramp for access. (see Florence tour). We were caught in a short storm and the driver even cleaned the windows so that we had a good view. the tour was good value and Pisa a must see.
