Port Elizabeth (commonly known as 'PE') is the Eastern Cape's biggest town and a major transport hub. The town is keen to market itself as a sunshine-filled holiday resort, and has branded itself the 'Nelson Mandela Bay,' an area which incorporates the city center, the nearby industrial area of Uitenhage and the huge, sprawling townships that surround them both.
Suggested Itineraries: Port Elizabeth
The wide sandy beaches to the south of central Port Elizabeth make the town a major water sports venue. Kings Beach stretches from the harbor breakwater to Humewood Beach; both beaches are sheltered. Catamaran sailors and surfers make for Hobie Beach, which is 3.1mi (5km) from the city center.
Addo Elephant National Park is 45mi (72km) north of Port Elizabeth, near the Zuurberg Range in the Sundays River Valley. Today there are more than 300 elephants in the park, and you'd be unlucky not to see some. There's even a chance of seeing lions and hyenas, which have recently been introduced to the park.
