Joanne was a wonderful guide! Our group ended up just being myself and my husband and a French couple, so we got to practice our French, but she flipped between the two languages effortlessly. She took us to smaller places that felt genuine and not at all like tourist traps. Her driving skills through the misty mountains were also impressive! Again, it felt like hanging out with a local friend, which was great. The boat trip was lovely even on a gray day.
Great day out, I took my mum as a surprise for her birthday, the tour operator and the hosts made us feel very special and my mum had an amazing day. Everyone we met was very knowledgeable about the region and the products available and they told the history in a very interesting and captivating way. I wouls do this tour again and I will recommend to others to give it a try!
Barbara was a fantastic guide, she kept us entertained the whole trip. The lunch, wine and port tastings were excellent and a great value. Erich, Lynda and Gord from Canada.
On time hotel pick up and drop off. Tour guide was excellent in his knowledge of area and Port tour and a safe driver. Lunch at the restaurant was good and the river cruise scenic. I would highly recommend this tour to friends visiting the region and I did tell our hotel that if anyone asks about a Douro Valley Tour to recommend this one. Well worth the money
It was terrific the driver so helpful and pleasant he told us so much about the area but did not lecture to us we were so pleased and happy to have been on this trip just wonderful
That was a great trip. A wonderful programme, pleasant and interesting. Our two guides Barbara and Pedro did an excellent job. The whole group of 14 people two minivans was very satisfied with the trip.
Very good value for money.
This tour is an amazing excursion, a wonderful opportunity to visit small family owned vineyards, relax on the river and marvel at the beautiful scenery. Our tour guide Alex was very knowledgeable and shared his knowledge and experience of the Douro Valley with great passion. A perfect way to experience the countryside and see the villages of Porto and the Valley. if you are thinking of doing this tour you will not be disappointed and be sure to ask for Alex, he will ensure you have a fantastic day.
Deserves to be 5 tour for all the best thing! ideal tour guide in form of 'peter' who was a pleasure to tour with and the breathtaking scenery adds another to the experience. Although the boat tour can be avoided but on a nice sunny day why not! its all worth it..the lunch is really good and worth the money along with the port wine tastings. Overall good experience and strongly recommend. Cheers.
Exceeded expectations! We were treated to an extremely personal and authentic look into the history and life in the Douro valley. It was clear that our tour guide had a phenomenal understanding of the area, the best places to stop, and the history of wine and port in the Douro valley.
Tastings were done at small family operated wineries where we felt like friends/guests more then just another tourist through the area.
We visited some of the port makers in Porto on another day during trip in Portugal and the experience there just doesn't even compare. You are hurtled through the tour like cattle while the tour guide rattles off rehearsed lines from memory. We strongly recommend considering this tour instead if you are interest in the Douro valley and Port making!
We thought this was a fun, informative trip. Our guide Guliano spelling? was polite and knowledgeable about the region and about wine. He picked us up right on time from our hotel and we were on our way along with five other guests. We did tastings at two wineries, one of which specialized in port wine. We opted for the one hour river tour. The only suggestion we would have is that the caption do some narration so we had some context for the pleasant scenery. We had an authentic Portuguese lunch that was served family style with two entrees, salad, bread, wine, coffee and dessert. Our guide asked us in advance if we had any dietary restrictions/preferences so he could make any necessary arrangements with the restaurant. The food was good and the restaurant was not touristy. While it was a long day, it was broken up by various stops and we have no regrets in booking this tour.
Wonderful time! Douro valley is beautiful. Wineries we visited were reasonable and generous with their pours. Much better overall experience than Napa Valley. Lunch was great and ample too.
Susana kept us,the Canadians, and the Fab 4 from Britian, thoroughly entertained on our whole trip! Her quizzes, commentary and humor were spot on. Beautiful drive to and thru the Valley, stopped for fresh fruit purchases on the way and photo ops. Nice wine tours, river cruise, delish lunch and Porto house with gracious hosts, lovely appetizers, Port and Fado sung by Susana!
If you have a day take this tour!
Pedro make the day awesome. Our group was good. Lots of laughs. Is a long day but full of great sites and learning points. Thanks Pedro.
We loved this excursion. The sights were amazing, along with the boat tour. Our tour guide was informative and very flexible. The meal was outstanding, we had several options but I tried the traditional tripe stew. It was one of my favourite meals in Portugal. Amazing. We would recommend this tour.
Excellent way to spend the day. The train trip was great but the trip back by the boat was excellent. The food was very good and the staff was great. We enjoyed the company of other travelers, very friendly. I strongly recommend the tour if you have a full day to spare.
This tour was definitely the highlight of our 12 day Portugal trip. When we first looked at booking our trip to Porto, Algarve and Lisbon we read that a Douro Valley Wine Tour was a must so we started researching online and came across this tour for 8 people with a Douro River Cruise but we unable to get it for the date we wanted so we booked the one with lunch. We booked this from Canada and we a little nervous that everything would be booked when we arrived in Portugal. We had nothing to worry about as everything was looked after, and to our surprised we were getting the original tour we looked at. Our guide Juan John was the best and made the trip so informative and enjoyable. The fact that another group was touring with us made the friendly competition so much more fun. We learned so much about Douro Valley Wines and Ports as well as some of the history of the area. I would highly recommend this tour to anyone visiting the area. We travel a great deal and would definitely use Viator tours again. Thank you Juan
Excellent day with great guide
We had a brilliant day. Pascal was awesome, he had lots of knowlege about the region and about Portugals history. We had our three year old daughter with us and Pascal kept her interested the whole day by joking around and doing a treasure hunt with her. The wine tastings were fun, as was the boatcruise. Lunch was nice too. The views were spectacular, even though it was raining.
It was great.
We absolutely loved it, the reviews here do not lie! We learned so much about port wine and how it's made. From the tasting we even learned which type of port wine and which age we prefer! My family didn't come on the tour as wine lovers at all, quite the opposite, and we left the tour and Porto bearing 8 new bottles of port!
The location is stunning and you get the best view. Well worth the money and time. Porto's cellars pale in comparison to this! I also have to mention Juliano sorry if I spelled this wrong! who was our tour guide, he was very informative and we felt very comfortable in his hands.
The tour was great even though the weather didn't cooperate initially. Our tour guide, Luis, was great - very friendly and worked really hard to make sure you were comfortable and we're having a great time. The tour included two wine estate tours, a nice 3 course lunch and a boat trip on the Duoro river. The first tour was a bit more commercial with a standard walk through the wine cellars and then to the wine tasting room. We had four tastes all of which were good but nothing exceptional. Then we went to a restaurant along the Duoro river. The food was delicious and we definitely were full after the meal. We then took a short boat ride along the river were we could see a number of vineyards along the banks. The weather improved duo g the afternoon and it was a very pleasant way to digest and enjoy the view. Then it was onto the second vineyard which was a very old family owned business with multiple generations involved. This tour was better than the first with the tour guide giving a more detailed tour, sharing more information about the wine making business and the family. The wine tasting was again four different type of Porto wine, some of which were very good. We ended up buying some from this vineyard. We headed back to Porto traveling along the river and through some narrow road along the cliffs. Overall a great day. My only complaint was that the van was not much better than a shuttle bus one takes to the airport. It was not luxury transportation. It was ok for comfort but given the price, I think that the ride out and back could have been a bit better.
This tour exceeded our expectations. The itinerary just right with the right number of breaks and for a full day. The vineyards we visited were family-owned, not the large combines, so that was very special. Our second port wine tasting was held in the owner's living room very intimate setting and a far cry from many other tastings we have been too in other countries. But Pedro, our tour guide, was the most notable reason why we are raving about the trip. He was not only really well informed about all things related to wine, but he was a font of knowledge about Portugal. He was also careful to say when he wasn't sure about something, and he didn't talk non-stop, either. If I could give him a 10 rather than a 5-star rating, I would. I highly recommend this tour and ask for Pedro.
A great way to spend the day in the Douro Valley! Our guide, Jose, was friendly, cheerful and very knowledgeable. We enjoyed his commentaries and willingness to answer all our questions. The scenery alone made the trip worthwhile, and we also enjoyed visiting the quintas and our boat tour as well. Lunch was delicious served family style and with wine of course. A source of many great memories.
fun and informative tour! our tour guide was local and told us all sorts of stories in the region. this is not just a wine tasting tour, it's learning about the people and culture and history! highly recommend, far better than doing those 30 mins tours in various port houses where they mostly tell you about the history of the brand and the wine/port they produce.
Tour was absolutely worth it. Our tour guide was well informed and pleasant.
I would recommend this tour if you are in the region of Porto.
