In the north of Argentina at the borders of Brazil and Paraguay, a giant chasm in the earth, left behind from a volcanic eruption, is the sight of one of the tallest and most impressive waterfalls in the world.  Iguazu Falls is taller than Niagara Falls, and has nearly 300 distinct falls over an area of about 2 miles. At its peak flow (from November to March), more than 450,000 cubic feet of water flow over the falls per second.

Puerto Iguazú, the Argentine town closest to the falls, is a great base for getting to know this natural marvel. You can choose how to spin it, visiting one or both sides of the falls (Argentine and Brazilian) or taking a foray out to the Itaipu dam, which is the largest operational hydroelectric project in the world.

The most up-close and personal view of Iguazu is a drenching ride into one of the lesser falls (plastic bags provided), easily combined with a full day tour of the Argentine side of Iguazu falls. For a drier option, take only the full day Argentine side Iguazu falls tour, passing the furiously boiling hotspot of the Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Throat), walking along boardwalk and asphalt trails, or taking an open-air train most of the way.

For an overview and a close-up view, a day trip from Puerto Iguazú that combines both the Argentine and Brazilian gives you a taste of each, including the panoramic view of the falls from Brazil. Or if the power of the falls has you thinking about the gigantic Itaipu dam, which provides 25% of Brazil’s, and 95% of Paraguay’s electricity, you can easily take a tour combine the Brazilian side of Iguazu falls and a visit to the Itaipu dam in one day.

Or for something different, visit the Jesuit mission of San Ignacio, built in 1632, which has been partially restored, and the Wanda Mines. Like Iguazú falls, they are a product of volcanic activity. Flowing lava cooled quickly, and crystalized into amethyst and agate, both semi-precious stones. A visit to the Jesuit mission and Wanda mines is an easy daytrip from Puerto Iguazu.

No matter which activities you choose from Puerto Iguazu, in the evening there are plentiful restaurants to choose from in the town, including ones specializing in steak or pasta, and of course, a fine Argentine Malbec to raise a glass to the day.
