The Yaque del North River is the longest river in the Dominican Republic and its waters, that tumble down 8,500ft (2590m) from the Cordillera Central mountains, are ideal for whitewater rafting.
Depending on the time of year and how high the river is, the rapids here range from mild to hair-raisingly good.
Rafting trips are the best way to experience the rivers beauty and power and can easily be arranged through a number of experienced tour operators in Jarabacoa or at any of the major tourist centers in Puerto Plata.

We had a blast! It was a great workout and so fun too! Make sure to bring water shoes with you, you can buy them there for $10, but if you happen to have them, why spend. The Yaque del North River is accessed from Jarabacoa, a town in the Cordillera Central mountains at the heart of the Dominican Republic's emerging eco tourism scene.
Other sights and activities in Jarabacoa include its impressive waterfalls and hiking, biking and horse riding along the surrounding alpine trails.
Jarabacoa is about 130km (80m) from Puerto Plata by car.
