Puerto Plata Beaches

Puerto Plata or “Port of Silver” was so named by Christopher Columbus in 1502 because of the misty silver hue created by the leaves of an indigenous tree.  While the island might not have had any silver back then, it is raking in the moolah from its thriving tourism industry today. Each year thousands of travelers from around the world descend on Puerto Plata’s shores in search of that ideal all-inclusive getaway amidst pristine white sand beaches and aquamarine waters.

Within minutes from Puerto Plata are a number of fantastic world class beaches. Of these, the most famous ones are arguably Sosua and Playa Dorada. Both are laden with sun-kissed golden white sands while Sosua Beach is sheltered by mesmerizing coral reefs. Cabarete Beach is great for windsurfing while Monte Cristi is great for diving. Playa Grande has big waves and must therefore be enjoyed with caution.  Luperon and Cofresi are also very popular with tourists.

Most beaches are dotted with food stalls, bars and handicraft vendors hoping to sell their wares. They are also the hub of many adrenalin pumping activities such as jet-skiing, paragliding and deep-sea fishing. For those who prefer something slower paced, there’s always the option of swimming, snorkeling, or sun-bathing on the beach.  One can also opt for a catamaran cruise or a glass-bottomed boat ride to enjoy the scenic splendor of coral reefs and expansive seas.

Unfortunately, Puerto Plata receives a fair share of monsoons during the winter and it’s best to visit during September and October if you want to avoid the rains.

Although it was overcast and actually rained - we still had a great deal of fun.
The snorkeling was excellent, the crew was such fun, and the sail back was a perfect ending. Highly recommended!
