The Rhine River is Germany's longest river and premier wine growing region, packed with romantic fortress ruins, lush vineyards and medieval castles perched high above the gorge. The romantic Middle Rhine between Koblenz and Bingen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Rhine in Flames firework spectacular bathes the riverside between Bonn and Linz in a festive glow.
The Rhine Valley offers dramatic landscapes with vineyards clinging to steep hills, imposing castles and dreamy wine villages. Explore history, wine and romance on the Rhine from Cologne to Mainz.Day 1: History & Culture
Cologne is famous for its Gothic Cathedral, Roman Dionysus mosaic, and magnificent contemporary art collection in the Ludwig Museum. Bonn, a pretty university town, was the birthplace of Beethoven and capital of the GDR from 1949-1999. Visit the 'Neanderthal' skull, dinosaur skeletons, and the Seven Hills of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Day 2: Wine and Romance
Relax in a beer garden or weinstube ('wine bar') in Koblenz serving local wine from the Mosel or Rhine vineyards. Narrow lanes, medieval architecture and romantic half-timbered houses create the impressive medieval charm of Braubach, "the town of wine and roses." Bacharach is named for Bacchus, the ancient Roman God of wine, who rolls through the streets of Bacharach once a year on a barrel.
Day 3: Festivals & Fortresses
Visit the remains of the Roman Fort surrounding the town centre, the garden of baroque Old Provist Church and Bad Salzig Spa Park in Boppard. The Rüdesheim Wine Festival is held every summer, with the coronation of the Weinkönigin ('Wine Queen') and her princesses. Sample Rüdesheimer Riesling on the 15th Century Drosselgasse, hike along the Riesling-Route past enchanting vineyards to Wiesbaden or take the cable car or chairlift to the Niederwald monument. Mainz was a Roman fort city which commanded the west bank of the Rhine. The Määnzer Fassenacht is one of Germany's largest carnivals, with a parade of more than 500,000 people in the streets. Join in and celebrate!

Doing what: Rhine Valley Trip from Frankfurt including Rhine River Cruise
The scenery is beautiful. Highly recommend this tour. The meal was delicious. Stops to see scenic sights were nice extras. Enjoyed the wine tasting at the end of the day. All it lacked was an overnight stay in one of the old castles. Saw at least a dozen castles overlooking the Rhine amidst the very picturesque countryside.

Doing what: Rhine Valley Trip from Frankfurt including Rhine River Cruise
We had a wonderful time. It was a cold March day with snow flurries so there was only one other couple on the tour. The four of us became fast friends, and along with our guide, Michael, we and a wonderful conversation about the Rhine, the castles and everything else. The boat ride was nice allowing us to see the small villages and castles. I do know the flora is better in the summer, but no crowds allowed us to see everything easily and make friends.
