Boxing Day

You might have had your fill of turkey and Christmas pudding, but if you’re spending the holiday season in the UK, festivities don’t end after the big day. For Brits, December 26th is Boxing Day, a day to tuck into leftover turkey, visit family and friends and max out your credit card at the post-Christmas sales. A tradition dating back to the Middle Ages when workmen and servants would receive a gift or ‘Christmas Box’ from their employers, Boxing Day is now a public holiday and a popular day for nationwide sporting events, with several Premier League football fixtures taking place across the country.

In London, Boxing Day also means the start of the January Sales (despite it still being December), with many shops on Oxford Street, Covent Garden and Knightsbridge opening their doors between 12pm-6pm and the crowds descending on the capital for the biggest sales of the year.

For tourists, Boxing Day is also a popular time for sightseeing and top attractions like the London Eye, Westminster Abbey, St Paul’s Cathedral and the London Dungeons will all be open. Take advantage of the festive atmosphere by attending the annual carol concerts in Trafalgar square, ice skating at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, catching a show in the West End Theater district or joining locals for the traditional Boxing Day swims at Hampstead Heath or the London Fields Lido. Alternatively, skip the city crowds and take a Boxing Day tour to nearby sights like the Cotswolds, Oxford and Bath, or visit iconic England sights like Windsor Castle, Stonehenge or William Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford upon Avon.
