What to Do in Macumba Beach
One of the top surf spots in Rio de Janiero is just west of the city proper, along the wilder white sand beaches that run along 17-km Barra da Tijuca (Rio’s longest beach) and Barra de Guaratiba. Popular with anyone seeking a scenic spot in the sun well away from the crowds, and particularly beloved by surfers, the star of the West Zone is Praia da Macumba, Macumba Beach.

Sometimes called the “Hawaii of Rio,” its big, consistent breaks host the Men’s and Women’s World Circuit Tour, featuring the biggest names in surfing. The water can get relatively cool in winter, but come summers even laypeople make their way out to Macumba to enjoy the cool, woodsy and less developed surroundings.
