Doing what: Ancient Ostia Small Group Day Trip from Rome

Rachael, the guide, brought this tour to life for us. We really got a feeling for what life was like in a city like Ostia back then. Only 15 people were on the tour. Also, it was good to escape the hustle and bustle of Rome for awhile.

Doing what: Ancient Ostia Small Group Day Trip from Rome

Ostia was the highlight of our trip for my daugher and Massimo (our guide from Dark Rome tours) made it special. He was extremely knowledgeable and made Ostia accessible for us in way it would not have been had we visited on our own because there is such limited signage. Our knowledge of ancient Rome was much enhanced by this tour.

We really enjoyed this tour.
Massimo's presentation were very interesting. We have visited Pompeii on a number of occasions, but Ostia presents a very different picture. It benefits from the reduced popularity/notoriety as there is so much space to walk around without being bothered by crowds.

This was just amazing. Massimo was so personable and knowledgeable and there
were only four of us on the tour, so it could not have been better. I had no idea that
Ostia Antica was such a huge area...very impressive and we loved taking the train.

Our guide Massimo was entertaining as well as well-informed. We learned a lot on this tour. Ostia is very large and quite well preserved, a real insight into Ancient Rome and its economy.

Doing what: Ancient Ostia Small Group Day Trip from Rome

Instructions on where to meet the guide were somewhat vague. We showed up 5-10 minutes early at the location that was given and at the prescribed time. There was no guide anywhere in sight. We looked everywhere. We asked many people who were standing around the area but had no luck. Either the guide didn't show up or left without us. Not sure. So, we decided to go to Ostia on our own. Never got my money back for this tour either. Should you decide to book this tour, do it at your own risk as it's a gamble on whether or not you will be able to locate the guide and/or get your money back. It is not difficult to get to Ostia Antica on your own. Plan on spending the better part of a day there as it is a fairly large area and bring water.

Doing what: Ancient Ostia Half-Day Trip from Rome

The trip to Ostia is well worthwhile - so interesting! And our guide was very knowledgeable, although not very personable. He actually instructed us on the way back that it was customary for the tour guide to receive tips! I think he lost a few tips that way!

This was an interesting site but I don't feel that Ancient Ostia lived up to the hype in claiming to be better than Pompeii. It really isn't. In addition the meeting point at the Pyramide metro station is not particularly easy to find. There was a lot to see though and I'm pleased that we went there.

Doing what: Ancient Ostia Small Group Day Trip from Rome

This was our favourite tour of the holiday. The guide was very engaging and knew alot about the history of Ostia. We were fascinated by the city and would definitely recommend booking a guided tour as if we had walked around on our own we would not have got as much out of it. The sights are fantastic, lots of photo opportunities and it really gives a sense of ancient Rome, much more so than the Roman Forum. There is a cafe where we stopped half way through the tour to refuel. There is a lot of walking involved, but it is broken up as we stopped (in the shade) to listen to information being given by the guide. A thoroughly enjoyable day, would definitely recommend.

Gio the tour guide was amazing! Very friendly extremely knowledgeable. You can tell this is her passion. Ostia was beautiful definitely should see it. I would suggest NEVER come to Rome in July/August it's just too hot. If you can avoid those months the experience will be even better.

Ancient Ostia was a lot of fun and interesting to learn about. My wife and I both liked our guide Gia, she was knowledgable and easy to be around.

Great morning (except for the 98+ temp). Hotel pickup was on time and trip to Ostia was educational. The guide (didn't ever give his name) was very knowledgeable. The site had a lot of trees, the number and quality of the excavtions made it easy to imagine it as a thriving sea port. Would recommend the trip.

Great tour; wonderful tour guide. Ostia is a treasure and simply wonderful to visit. This was our second visit and by far the bet experience. Tiffany made all the difference: well informed, well spoken, parient and friendly. Wish we had booked her for our other Rome tours.

Great tour of Ancient Ostia. We were given every opportunity for questions and learned much of Ostia society and their way of life. Very well preserved city. Enjoyable walk with shade for those hot summer days. A very short train ride from Rome. We highly recommend this tour!
