What an amazing day! Both tour guides were archaeologists so they were so knowledgeable and insightful, but most of all passionate. We learned so many interesting facts about the Colosseum, the arch of Constantine, the arch of Titus, and the Roman Forum. Then for the afternoon we explored a different part of the city to see the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. And even got to stop for a complimentary drink or gelato. Overall just a fantastic day of tours with excellent guides!
Easy to locate the meeting point above the colosseum metrostation. Put into tour groups, our guide was Maurisio or Morris, an exceptional guide who really knew his stuff (explained he was an archaeologist) and had a great sense of humour. Throughout the morning tour of the colosseum information was given at suitable points throughout the tour with loads of time given for photographs.
Once we had finished at the colosseum we walked over to the Roman Forumn, this was also fantastic (although in the hotter months of July or August I can imagine that it would become difficult to do as it's completely open to the sun).
Once the morning tour concluded we were very grateful to our guide Maurisio helping us out by taking us (partner and I) to a pizzeria which we would have never found.
The afternoon tour was again really easy to find the meeting point (Spagna metrostation) walk out to the palm trees and meet on the seats.
Our tour guide was Patricia who again excellent, she took us round: Spanish steps, trevi fountains, Pantheon. Loads of interesting information was given about the history of the area and attractions, which was great. Lots of opportunities for pictures as well as a drink and ice cream stop.
We highly recommend this tour.
Elise was a wonderful guide. She was very friendly and expanded on all questions often going off topic to give more information. She was really in love with her work and it showed. This tour took us into the arena, underground and to the upper tier where the view both inside and outside the colosseum were amazing. This tour also included the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. There is a lot of walking but it was well worth it. Go early in the morning for less crowds and better pictures.
The joining instructions were clear and the technology worked flawlessly. The guide was very knowledgable and her descriptions were quite vivid. She happily answered questions although did not always spot when someone wished to ask one.
All in all I can highly recommend this tour if you want to understand the complex history and layout of the Roman Forum and the Colosseum.
Morning tour of colosseum. Fastastic introduction to the colosseum. Was initially concerned with the inability to move freely to take photographs. But the guide gave ample time to stop at key photo spots. Similar for palatine hills and the roman forum. Enjoyed the trip despite the rain.
Afternoon tour. The rain continues. But the guide managed to make the walking trip meaningful. Told us a great deal of stories about the various streets and monuments. Very interesting walk.
Educational and well delivered. Lots of walking and standing listening, but the time goes so quickly as the guide tells you stories of the historic area. Well worth it, otherwise you would be walking around the roman forum with I idea at what you are looking at!
The Colosseum is an amazing structure in itself but we thought the guided tour made a massive difference to our experience. Not queueing was a big plus in the off season and would be even more so in the summer, that is the first must on the list. Our tour guide was called Nina and her knowledge was only rivalled by her skill in delivering every bit of information in bitesize chunks with a bit of humour thrown in for good measure. We felt we were really given a true historical representation of how the building was used backed up by pictures of how everything would have looked in its prime. The additions of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill would have been almost non-events without a proper guide, we learnt a lot more and had a better experience than we would have done with just a book.
Outstanding! We completed this tour in December of 2013 and had the pleasure having a great historian as our guide. We greatly enjoyed seeing the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Palentine Hill all of which were included. Throughout the tour, our guide provided detailed information and insight into Roman life of that day. We discovered much of what we had learned in the past was not true. It was great being in a small group and having the ability to have all questions answered. This was truly a memorable day.
Trip was very rewarding with an informative tour guide. In order to appreciate the history and what you are seeing, you'd either have to 1) do your own extensive history lesson at home, but hey, who has the time? 2) do a guided tour with a reputable company who hires qualified and knowledgeable staff (we had an archaeologist). At the end of October, this place was crowded and skipping the line alone was well worth the ticket. It was particularly helpful that the guide also provided illustrations of how the Roman Forum looked like before its demise and artistic renderings of buildings intact and then comparing it to what we actually saw.
It was a great tour, although I thought I had paid for just a Roman forum and Colosseum tour, (as did some of the other people on my tour) so had seen many of the sights already. It was a long time on your feet but our guide was great, and had many stories. I would recommend this as a tour to do on day one in Rome to help you get your bearings of the city.
Doing what: Ancient Rome Half-Day Walking Tour
This tour was offered through Dark Rome. The meeting place on the directions say in the square above the subway for the morning tour which is actually a circular area above the line :) thought I'd mention since quite a few people were confused. Giulia was our morning guide. Very good tour of the Colosseum and very knowledgable guide. She had lots of great pictures to help you I vision what it looked like in ancient times. Morning tour also includes the Roman forum. Afternoon tour led my Damien. This tour brings you to the major attractions like the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, and Pantheon. We saw the sight on our own but you miss a lot without a guide. Overall great. Anything Dark Rome tour company led was fantastic!
The walking tour is a must. No queuing . An informative guide and lots of time to ask questions etc. The guide was excellent, although sadly I don't remember her name. The meeting point was easy to find. My only gripe was that we were taken around the colluseum and then the Roman forum,at the end of the tour we could stay in the forum for as long as we wished but we didn't have any free time in the colluseum. 30-45 mins free time there would have been good too.
We throughly enjoyed our tour of the Colosseum and the forum area. Angilini (not sure of spelling) was our tour guide and she was so informative! She really loves history and it shows in her talks. She was fun to listen to as she took you back in time as to what happened there. Unfortunately due to the strike we missed the Roman Forum but she took us around and explained all the other ruins in the area so we did not feel that we were short changed. I would highly recommend this tour.
This excursion was excellent and I cannot speak highly enough of the tour guide who conducted it. She was extremely well-informed, personable, answered all our questions and went above and beyond what I ever expected.
For anyone wanting to see the main sights in ANY city, booking your excursion online in advance using the 'SKIP THE LINE' ticket option is the ONLY way to do it.
You receive your voucher online which tells you exactly when and where to go to meet your tour guide. At the meeting spot there is a small group (10-20 people, roughly) who have all purchased the same excursion. The tour guide meets you, gets you outfitted with a receiver and headphones and then you proceed to the venue for your tour. She/he has a microphone and you are able to hear the tour guide at all times.
Your prepaid group then gets to walk past the lineup of HUNDREDS of other people (ie. individuals who are waiting just to buy entrance tickets). You enter immediately with no holdups/ no lineups.
This particular tour allowed us access to the lower level of the Colosseum which is fascinating all by itself. The guide provides detailed information about the Colosseum and the Roman Forum that you would not know if you simply bought a ticket and wandered around on your own.
A long day with plenty of walking but I would do it all again in a heartbeat.
Unbelievable! The tour guide was extremely knowable. We had a small group with English dialect and a full tour of the coloseum, roman forum, and palatine hill! Do this tour!!!!!
