This was a fabulous, informative tour providing great insight and historical perspective of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Since the tour started early, we were able to enter the Colosseum before the general public. Starting with the underground chambers, you got a good feeling of what it was to be a gladiator like all those years ago. Our guide, Roxanne, was born in Rome so was able to provide a lot of details and history of this area. The view from the third tier was just spectacular. Not only of the Colosseum itself but also of the city, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. I loved Roxanne's 'magic book' which showed what you saw standing today plus an overlay of what it probably looked like years ago. It was incredible! Definitely a tour worth taking!
I was luck to have Anjelica as my tour guide. She is extremely knowledgeable on roman history. Doing the VIP tour and early in the morning meant we didn't have to fight the crowds. Besides the Colosseum we also visited the Palatine hill and Roman Forum. A most enjoyable day.
This was a fascinating tour - especially the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Our guide was fantastic. She took some time at the beginning of the tour to learn all our names (there were 16 of us and she referred to personal relevant aspects of most of us as we went round). Very impressed at this. This was an extremely entertaining and educational tour. To see the inside of the Colosseum in reality after having only viewed pictures, mainly of the outside I may say, was a real eye opener and to become aware of the role and importance of the Forum was equally thought provoking. Our afternoon tour took in sites such as the Spanish steps, the Trevi fountain (under renovation at this time) the Pantheon and Piazza Navona etc. was also very interesting. One recommendation: do the organised tour if you can as it's far superior to walking round with a guide book with its limited detail. Viator have not given us anything less than well informed and knowledgeable guides and we would thoroughly recommend them, Undoubtedly 10/10.
This tour was fantastic. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, the Colosseum, and the surrounding areas. She not only told us about the history of those areas but whats happened to them since, how they've come to such ruins, and what the city is now trying to do to restore them. When you get to the Colosseum your tour guide stays with you but another tour guide (with the keys to the underground chambers and upper tier) takes over the tour. He was fantastic as well. He was able to give you so much detail that you could envision how the Colosseum would have looked back when the gladiators were fighting main stage. Overall we couldn't have been luckier with our tour guides. You could tell they really loved what they did and enjoyed sharing it with other people.
I would recommend these 2 tours. The first tour of the Colosseum was fast paced but very informative. Francesca had a little broken English so it was hard to follow what she was saying sometimes. However, she did know a lot about the Roman Forum. Irene was our second guide and she was awesome.
We had a great tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum, we did the three hour walking tour. Our guide Alessandro was very knowledgeable and passionate about Archaeology. We had head sets to listen to our guide.
You need to be reasonable fit for this tour One elderly couple had to leave as they could not cope with the walking. It is also a bonus if the weather is fine.
This was my favourite tour during our trip to Rome. Our group got private access to the colosseum floor, the under floor area, and the upper third level with its amazing views of inside and outside areas of the colosseum. Our guide was very informative and shared an impressive amount of historical information with us as we made our way throughout the colosseum and surrounding Roman Forum grounds. A professionally guided tour is the only way (unless you are a history scholar) to fully immerse yourself in the history of what you are seeing and put it in context.
We joined the group led by Elisabetta and enjoyed the tour immensely. She gave a good overview and insight to Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palentine Hill. Very informative, rather than just walk the various sites without any associated knowledge.
We absolutely recommend Viator tour, and Elisabetta's tour is top of our vote!!
It was a very wet day and whether the monuments would be open was uncertain but your local contacts were very helpful and a general air of good humour was maintained by all ,during our sojourn in the Metro station entrance, sheltering from the elements. We then embarked on a fascinating tour of the colosseum and luckily also the Roman forum ,which opened to visitors during the early part of our tour. The organisation was excellent ,the guide was friendly, engaging and very knowledgable. As part of our tour was not possible ,the sub arena area was flooded ,we spent more time in the arena and the upper tiers .We were on our own for these areas as they were not generally accessible to the standard ticket payer. On arrival home Viator had reimbursed 30% of our payment !without any action by ourselves . The Viator people at booking via phone were very helpful. We would thoroughly recommend them to anyone planning a visit to thesis sites .We will definitely use them again in our travels.we were in a group of 19 which felt about right.
Did this tour 28.10.2014....we were very fortunate to have an Italian guide that was also an archaeologist, her name was Barbara from City Wonder Tours and she was great. The tour is very comprehensive of the Colosseum but can be a bit tiring with the roman forum ruins included. We started at 8:30am and finished at about 12:30pm. I would have preferred to do the in depth Colosseum tour on its own....it just depends what your schedule is like, how much time you have etc.
Great tour! Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the construction, use, and current repair work at the Colosseum. It was amazing, educational, and entertaining. After touring the Colosseum, our guide took us on a walking tour of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. We saw the Arch of Septimus Severus, the House of the Vestals, Temple of Saturn and the Arch of Titus. It was amazing to walk among the ruins -- it gave new meaning to the word "awesome". We were tired by the end of the tour, but it was worth it.
This was a pretty great tour. I learnt a lot about the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Our guide Viviana was great. She's a Roman archeologist and actually working on excavating a site between the Colosseum and the Roman Forum at the moment. She gave us some really great insights into the ruins and what life would have been like back them. I did the small group tour and there were only 5 of us. Well worth it!
Doing what: Ancient Rome Half-Day Walking Tour
We had looked forward to this tour and were not disappointed. Our guide was outstanding. She was always smiling and positive and made every effort to inform us of all that there was to see and understand during our tour. The tour included the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and the Colosseum which was truly the highlight. By the end of the tour, although we were physically tired we felt we definitely had the best tour possible.
Our tour guide, Claudia, was our best tour guide across 4 tours we took during a 5 day visit in Rome. She had a passion for her subject, and though Italian by birth, had a solid command of English. The Colosseum is the best part of the tour...lots to learn, and so fascinating to think what engineering of 2000 years ago was capable of. Also really helped to have a tour guide for the Roman Forum...otherwise it's hard to really fully appreciate what you're seeing or the history of it all.
Amazing tour. We went from the very floor of the colosseum where the gladiators and animals waited, Saw and understood how the manually hoisted elevators worked. Walked the " Walk of Death" where the gladiators entered the colosseum, like how a football team enters a stadium.Just stood there with a feeling of awesomeness and fear! Then climbed to the very top tier with steep steps.
After leaving the colosseum, we walked to the Roman Forum, the center of ancient Roman politics.A very long and fascinating tour.
