Did this tour 28.10.2014....we were very fortunate to have an Italian guide that was also an archaeologist, her name was Barbara from City Wonder Tours and she was great. The tour is very comprehensive of the Colosseum but can be a bit tiring with the roman forum ruins included. We started at 8:30am and finished at about 12:30pm. I would have preferred to do the in depth Colosseum tour on its own....it just depends what your schedule is like, how much time you have etc.
Great tour! Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the construction, use, and current repair work at the Colosseum. It was amazing, educational, and entertaining. After touring the Colosseum, our guide took us on a walking tour of the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. We saw the Arch of Septimus Severus, the House of the Vestals, Temple of Saturn and the Arch of Titus. It was amazing to walk among the ruins -- it gave new meaning to the word "awesome". We were tired by the end of the tour, but it was worth it.
This was a pretty great tour. I learnt a lot about the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Our guide Viviana was great. She's a Roman archeologist and actually working on excavating a site between the Colosseum and the Roman Forum at the moment. She gave us some really great insights into the ruins and what life would have been like back them. I did the small group tour and there were only 5 of us. Well worth it!
Doing what: Ancient Rome Half-Day Walking Tour
We had looked forward to this tour and were not disappointed. Our guide was outstanding. She was always smiling and positive and made every effort to inform us of all that there was to see and understand during our tour. The tour included the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, and the Colosseum which was truly the highlight. By the end of the tour, although we were physically tired we felt we definitely had the best tour possible.
Our tour guide, Claudia, was our best tour guide across 4 tours we took during a 5 day visit in Rome. She had a passion for her subject, and though Italian by birth, had a solid command of English. The Colosseum is the best part of the tour...lots to learn, and so fascinating to think what engineering of 2000 years ago was capable of. Also really helped to have a tour guide for the Roman Forum...otherwise it's hard to really fully appreciate what you're seeing or the history of it all.
Amazing tour. We went from the very floor of the colosseum where the gladiators and animals waited, Saw and understood how the manually hoisted elevators worked. Walked the " Walk of Death" where the gladiators entered the colosseum, like how a football team enters a stadium.Just stood there with a feeling of awesomeness and fear! Then climbed to the very top tier with steep steps.
After leaving the colosseum, we walked to the Roman Forum, the center of ancient Roman politics.A very long and fascinating tour.
We had a wonderful tour of the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill with our Viator guide, Sara N. She was a very welcoming and friendly lady with vast knowledge about everything Roman as she has a Phd an is a qualified archaeologist, and the tour was so good, we would happily do it again. Sara showed us pictures of how Rome would have looked when the Colosseum was in its prime and gave us lots of interesting information about everything we viewed, which made the whole trip worthwhile. She brought it to life and imparted knowledge that you cannot get from guide books alone. It's pretty pointless going to see
these monuments without a guide because it will not have the same meaning or impact on you. This was the highlight of our trip - 100%.
Very informative, great guide. A comprehensive overview of the Colosseum and area of the ancient Roman Forum. Be prepared to walk and climb!
Best tour ever. Simply because we had without a doubt the best tour guide: Sev.
He brought the colosseum and Roman forum to life for us with his descriptions and stories! We really appreciated how grande the colosseum once was and how advanced Roman life was. Thank u for a great experience.
Francesca was our tour guide and was very well informed about our tour! She had a book with her to show how the roman forum n coliseum looked in the old times compared to now. Amazing experience to go underground in the coliseum and see where the gladiators and animals were kept! Overwhelming experience to be a part of history!! Learned so much from this tour!! Great job!
Myself and my husband joined this tour on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning in Rome and it was the best decision we made the whole trip. Our tour guide's name was Sev, an archaeologist, who was absolutely fantastic. He made everyone feel comfortable and enthused right from the start. His wealth of knowledge was immeasurable and his delivery of information was very professional but relaxed at the same time. The three hour tour flew by very quickly as Sev brought us back in time to the days of ancient Rome both in the Coliseum and Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. We really got a taste of what life was like back then, it was so interesting and a tour we will never forget. Ancient Rome is fascinating and we would recommend joining Viator for this tour as it will transport you to another world in an informative but humorous way. Well done Sev.
This was a very good and informative tour for out first day in Rome. One item I found perfect for this and all following tours were the personal headphone receivers to hear the tour guide directly. Getting to the meet-up point was easy. The tour starts in the old Roman Forum area and you get a very good tour of the area including the old temples, Forum area, and Circus Maximous area so no need to go to these areas in a different tour is needed. We visited the Colosseum last and spent the end of the tour there. We added the upgrade of the lower and upper levels and this is a must, otherwise the tour will be short and you will not get the full sense of the size and scope of the building. Our guide was very informative, run by City Tours, and provided a lot of information on each sites, ruin, and area we visited. The pace was good but if you have issues with hills or steps please note there are a lot on this tour. The elevator in the Colosseum is limited and saves you just a few steps overall. This is a must do tour when going to Rome.
Fantastic private tour of Colosseum, and we also toured Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
Guide very informative, friendly and efficient
We had gates open to areas where public normally doesn't see.
Well worth the history experience
Great value for money
It was our 2nd trip back to Rome with the same tour. We were NOT disappointed! Our guide, Francesca, was knowledgeable, informative and professional. This experience was so very different from our visit in 2011. Although there were similar sites, we were taken through the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill and the Colosseum with different routes. Some areas that were not available in 2011 were opened during this visit.
The most unforgettable experience during the Colosseum visit was that, we were sitting near the entrance way at the partially rebuilt floor. The guide was giving us a historical insight about the magnificent Colosseum while we admired and appreciated the surroundings. We were even allowed to take pictures in that area afterwards. It was truly AMAZING!
Marina did an excellent job with our tour of the Roman Forum and Palantine. She was joined by a colleague for at the Colosseum who also did an excellent job in her presentation.
